Domaine André Robert is now run by fifth generation family member Claire Robert and her charming and talented husband Jean-Baptiste Denizart. The Robert family have been vine growers since the 1800’s, but the current estate wasn’t founded until the 1960’s when André Robert purchased the Maison, a quaint building on the Rue de Orme with significant chalk aging cellars, in the heart of if the village of Mesnil. The purchase came with some vineyards to add to the family’s already significant holdings. The family and their tight team of skilled viticulturists tend to 65 plots spread over 14.5 hectares. 85% of the estate’s vineyards are classified Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Indeed it is one of the most enviable vineyard holdings in Mesnil alone (38 Grand Cru plots) which is unmatched. Chardonnay forms the core identity of the house, over 95% of their vineyards are, of course, Chardonnay. They are a champion of no malolactic fermentation (with the exception of Terre du Mesnil cuvee) and all wines have a component in oak barrels (noting the barrels are an average age of 12 years, so not looking for oak derived flavours per se). These are wonderful, gastronomic wines. Their mineral drive and tightly coiled energy reverberates on the palate. They are utterly unique and certainly beguiling.
The Jardins du Mesnil comes from a multitude of their plots in Mesnil-sur-Oger. The blend is composed of east facing vineyards midslope (Les Coullemets du Midi, Les Finciarts, Les Vaucherots, Les Hauts d’Aillerand, Les Musettes) along with two plots from the lower plains (les Hautes Mottes and Les Coullemets). There are also plots from the high slopes that end up here (if they don’t make it to Terre du Mesnil)." - Importer Notes
