Description

// 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay - Certified Organic

Base vintage - 2019

Disgorged in January 2023. L’Atavique is Sébastien’s ancestral cuvée. It’s a blend of Grand Cru fruit, with the current disgorgement weighing in at 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay. The base is from the 2019 vintage (55%), with the reserve an even split between the two previous vintages. It was disgorged with zero dosage after 36 months on lees.

Sourced from 60 micro-plots spread across Verzy’s clay, chalk and flint soils, this cuvée is fermented in 80% French oak and 20% stainless steel. Peter Liem refers to the Mouzon Leroux style as “one of vibrant depth and voluptuous presence on the palate”, and both these qualities are perfectly encapsulated in l’Atavique. It’s a deep and striking wine with intense mineral concentration, pure flavours and a persistent, linear drive. Salinity, leesy richness, some light oxidative notes, red fruits and citrus are matched by chalky textures, and a deeply vinous complexity. Fabulous density, drive and length too.

"Toasty scents, touches of stone fruit fresh and dried, chicken stock, and amontillado. Very pristine in the palate yet also imbued with nutty savouriness and chicken stock notes in tow. So deliciously briny! Ripe apple flavours, some nectarine too. Rich in a way but also refreshing. More potent. Has an energy and bent." - 94 Points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

"A sculpted Champagne that's firm and mouthwatering, yet the fine and creamy mousse softens the impression, bringing overall harmony. The baked white cherry, raspberry coulis, pickled ginger and anise notes are underscored by a streak of salty mineral, and accents of lime blossoms and graphite chime on the finish." - 93 Points, Wine Spectator
