Grosset - The Clare Valley Icon Marks Its Return (Releases & Tasting)

Grosset - The Clare Valley Icon Marks Its Return (Releases & Tasting)

Published by The Wine Emporium on 5th Sep 2024

Few Australian winemakers have been the subject of such admirable praise and plaudits more so than Jeffrey Grosset, and indeed we can think of very few others who deserves it like he does! Since laying down his mark in the beautiful Clare Valley back in 1981, he has relentlessly sought after one particular aspiration; craft pure and faithful Riesling interpretations that express the balance and beauty of their region. Working in certified organic and biodynamic vineyards, and currently holding just eight staff members that have a cumulative 100 years of vintage experience, Jeffrey and his team create wines where every element feels in its right place. Nothing ever sticks out where it shouldn't - their slow and gentle process in the fields and winery ensures total precision, finesse and appropriate subtlety from what are acknowledged as the coolest sites in the Clare (at altitudes between 460-570 metres).

Having just tried these releases today, we can't be more excited to show you all at this Saturday's tasting (7th September) between 12 and 2pm! All lined up for you to enjoy in the weekend heat will be the Alea, Springvale, and Polish Hill riesling expressions, plus the limited G110 release, the Apiana Fiano, Nereus Shiraz/Nero d'Avola blend. We'll also have a very special 2003 back vintage of the Polish Hill, too...

Take a look below for all the latest praise very deservedly presented to these new releases, and we hope to see you Saturday!

Grosset Releases & Tasting (Saturday 7th September - 12 to 2pm)

Alea Riesling 2024Available for $48

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic
"Floral/gardenia and jasmine traces on the bouquet, which is clean and fresh and lovely. The palate is soft and fruity with perhaps a faint dab of sweetnes that leavens the acidity and any sense of austerity, rendering the wine very approachable already and quite delicious in its extreme youth. Great balance and mouth-feel. Superb riesling, already drinking well." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"Grosset’s Alea Riesling is a super wine nowadays. It’s touched by sweetness and it has an associated grapey aspect, but there are dramatic mineral and tonic characters in the mix now too, and more kick to the finish than ever. Alea Riesling now keeps some of its affability up its sleeve, and it does because it’s busy kicking rocks of quartz down the palate road. Just-sweet apple and citrus flavours pop throughout but it’s the extras that really excite. I don’t roll out the “best ever” slogan very often but I think that this is the best Grosset Alea of the 12 or so vintages that I’ve tasted." - 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Apiana Fiano 2024Available for $55

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic
"Specific clones of this indigenous grape from Campania, grown on poor soil at the Grosset Rockwood Vineyard, on a cool-site in the Clare Valley, have resulted in an extraodinarily powerful and aromatic expression of the variety. This year, there is a greater intensity of flavour which flows through the wine and lingers on the dry finish: bees- wax, candied honey, bliss." - Winemaker Notes

The flow of flavour, the fruit intensity, and the extra linger of the finish: this wine feels complete. It’s a floral wine but a complex one, with bees wax, nectarine, nashi pear, apple and a meaty, umami character that is most enticing. Intensity here is very good but it feels delicate; intricate." - 93 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Springvale Riesling 2024Available for $55

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic
"Spicy, yeasty, grapefruit-pith, fresh and reserved aromas, bright and nascent, the palate soft and grapy, rounded and easygoing but somewhat short on drive. This is a baby and will be so much more interesting in a year or two, minimum. Plenty of potential." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"Polish Hill has this covered but this is still a fabulous Springvale Riesling. It’s an interesting wine, driven by lemon and lime as you would expect but with anise, marshmallow and pretty floral characters floating about. The anise is almost into red licorice territory, which seems bizarre in a riesling, but it’s definitely there, like a lurker to the forum of citrus and tonic water. Grosset has been a star producer for all the time I’ve been in wine but right now its wines are as good or better than they’ve ever been." - 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Polish Hill Riesling 2024Available for $80

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic
"Polish Hill for the ages; a white that will delight while young; and yet age as gracefully as we hope to. At its core, it is intense, powerful and fine, pure lime juice that tingles on the mid-palate and shows impressive length even now. One of the finest wines to come from the Grosset Polish Hill Vineyard. Enjoy now or in 20 years." - Winemaker Notes

"Exceptional concentration of fruit flavour here. This is straight and direct but wow it has a charge to it. Lime, chalk, white flower and wet slate flavours storm through the palate in emphatic fashion. There’s an extra note to the finish that I can’t quite place but I’ll call it brine splashed on potpourri splashed on rocks. The longer I sit and taste this wine the more I think that this is a Grosset riesling for the ages." - 97 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

"Spicy, dried herb and nettle aromas, a faint whiff of pastry-like yeastiness, the palate crisp and refined, intense and long with penetrating qualities and real persistence. A ripping young riesling: all it needs is time." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

G110 Riesling 2023Available for $125
(Very Limited!)

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic
"Another excellent vintage for this tiny quantity, single clone riesling (110), with G, for Georgie Grosset whose bright idea it was. The G110 is subtly perfumed yet persistent, intense and powerful through the mid-palate and onto a lingering finish which is tight, ultra-dry, pure and fine. Grown and made under biodynamic certification, this wine has once again undergone extended time on lees. This encourages yeast autolysis which, combined with the distinctiveness of the clone and uniqueness of the vineyard site, contributes to its most distinctive flavour profile." - Winemaker Notes

Nereus Shiraz 2022Avaiable for $55

// 90% Shiraz & 10% Nero d'Avola
Certified Organic & Biodynamic

"The shiraz, a less common clone (known as ‘Tahbilk’) is showing greater depth of flavour and better balanced tannins as the vines age. The Grosset Nereus 2022 is once again a blend of shiraz with ten per cent nero d’avola – has bold, ripe and succulent texture that is fresh and lively, dense and powerful, with blackberry, mulberry and blackcurrant flavours in the mid-palate and a finish that is intense and long. It is generous and fleshy, ripe and full-flavoured and such delicious drinking at a young age." - Winemaker Notes

"Very bright, deep purple-red colour, with similarly bright youthful and fresh aromas of banana esters, red cherry and raspberry, the wine turning deliciously juicy on the tongue with crisp acidity lifting the sweet berry fruit, and fine, subtle, powdery tannins providing the backing. A vibrant young red that drinks well early and should also age well." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

We will also be showing a 2003 back vintage Polish Hill Riesling on the day, too!
