Château Troplong-Mondot Evening & Dinner!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 27th Aug 2023

Join us at Tama Dining for a night celebrating the fantastic wines of St-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé 'B' Château Troplong-Mondot. Hosted by the commercial director of the Estate, Ferréol du Fou (a Burgundian!), who will take us through each of these very special bottles from the right-bank, and how each one fits into the house's immense legacy. Look below for a note on the Estate, the wine lineup with tasting notes and the menu from Tama Dining. Tama is the latest venue from the minds behind iconic restaurants (such as beloved OTTO) and their kitchen boasts a Josper charcoal oven that elevates anything that goes through it - we are very excited about the wines and the food, and hope you are too!

The wines of Troplong-Mondot, hailing from the esteemed Saint-Émilion appellation in Bordeaux, are a true embodiment of elegance and opulence. With a history reaching back centuries, this 1er Grand Cru Classé estate cultivates its vineyards on a terroir of limestone and clay, crafting wines that are a harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines captivate the senses with their profound richness, unveiling luscious notes of dark fruits like blackberry and plum, interwoven with hints of spices and tobacco. Structured yet velvety tannins lend these wines remarkable aging potential, allowing them to evolve gracefully over time, transforming into even more refined and complex expressions. Troplong-Mondot's wines stand as a testament to the artistry of Bordeaux winemaking, consistently earning accolades and embodying the essence of the region's winemaking heritage.

- Raw Scallops, cauliflower, finger lime & Charcoal Calamari, miso, citrus

& Champagne Pol Roger NV

"The current release of Pol Roger's NV Brut Réserve is quite dramatic, bursting with aromas of mandarin oil, honeycomb, elderflower, fresh bread and musky peach. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's generous and textural, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and a pillowy mousse." - 92 Points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

///

First entree -

Yellowfin Tuna, kohlrabi remoulade, fennel

and 2017 Chevalier Blanc ($285 RRP)

"A wine of noble breeding and class, the 2017 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc dazzles from start to finish. Dried flowers, chamomile, mint and citrus confit struggle to emerge, buried by the wine's sheer richness and concentration. The 2017 needs at least a few years in bottle to come together, but that won't be an issue for a wine that will drink well for several decades." - 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

///

Second entree -

Beef Tartare, potato, capers, egg yolk

and 2018 Château Troplong-Mondot "Mondot" ( from Magnum $449 RRP)

"The 2018 Mondot, 100% Merlot, is a fabulous second wine. Rich and luscious to the core, the 2018 is brisk and vibrant, with remarkable nuance and tons of saline-infused energy. Floral and spice notes add perfume to red cherry/plum fruit. Look for Mondot to be one of the stars among Bordeaux's more affordable 2018s. More than anything else, in 2018 Mondot is flat-out delicious." - (90-93) Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

///

Third entree -

Brisbane Valley Quail, chestnut, prune, honey

and 2017 Château Troplong-Mondot, 1er Grand Cru Classé ($630 RRP)

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Troplong Mondot is a little closed to begin, soon unfurling to reveal expanding notions of warm blackberries, wild blueberries and licorice plus hints of smoked meats, black olives, pencil shavings and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed mouth-coating black fruits, exploding into loads of earthy sparks with a soft, velvety texture from ripe, rounded tannins. It finishes with spectacular freshness and loads of layers." - 95 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

2015 Château Troplong-Mondot, 1er Grand Cru Classé ($785 RRP)

"Blended of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak, 85% new, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Troplong Mondot is redolent of warm plums, blackberry tart and blueberry pie with suggestions of underbrush, bay leaves, cedar chest and lavender plus a waft of baking spices. Full-bodied and full-throttle in the mouth, the palate is decadently packed with a solid core of black and blue fruit layers, supported with firm, grainy tannins and finishing with loads of spicy layers. This pedal-to-the-metal beauty is the ultimate indulgence for the hedonists!" - 96 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

///

Main course -

Angus Tomahawk, red wine jus, Béarnaise & sides

and 2009 Château Troplong-Mondot, 1er Grand Cru Classé ($1,299 RRP)

"Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Troplong Mondot bounds out of the glass with plum preserves, spice cake, mincemeat and potpourri scents plus suggestions of exotic spices, incense and a waft of balsamic. Full-bodied, super rich, concentrated and plushly textured, the hedonic fruit possesses loads of spicy layers and a very long and decadent finish. If you love wines you can stand a spoon up in, you're gonna go nuts over this extravagant beauty." - 96 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

2002 Château Troplong-Mondot, Grand Cru Classé ($689 RRP)

"With extraordinary purity and intensity, the 2002 Troplong boasts a saturated purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of underbrush, cassis, licorice, smoke, and a hint of crushed stones. The beautiful integration of soft, supple tannin, pinpoint precision of all the elements, expansive mid-palate, and tremendous 35-40 second finish are something one certainly associates more with the 2000 or 1998." - 94 Points, The Wine Advocate

///

Dessert -

Honeycake,yoghurt sorbet, apple 2007

and Château Climens, 1er Cru Classé, Sauternes / Barsac ($410 RRP)

"Tasted single blind against its peers. Chateau Climens always tends to go into its shell after bottling, which is probably why I was not dishing out an even higher score to this still, spellbinding Barsac. The 2007 is endowed with a lovely bouquet: very pure with honey, a touch of orange-blossom and a touch of quince. The palate is very well-balanced with great purity and a dash of spice as well as a lovely viscous, botrytis-laden finish that possesses awesome weight and persistency. This is a slice of heaven in a glass, but it definitely needs time to reveal its true potential." - 98 Points, Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
