Hugel & Fils, founded in 1639 in picturesque Riquewihr, Alsace, France, is still 100% family owned and managed by the 12th consecutive generation of the family. The family make many different wines, but it's their core "Classic" range with the iconic yellow label that has established a terrific reputation for Hugel in Australia. The wines consistently over-deliver and are great value for money, while at the top end, Hugel's bottlings are among the most important of the region.
With the warming of the weather, we're thrilled to offer Hugel's core range at great prices, while we also present a limited allocation of their newly-released 2012 Grand Cru Riesling's. Bottled in 2013, these have been resting in the cellars at Domaine Hugel until now. They're still in a very young phase of their evolution, and will continue to mature and improve for the better part of 1-2 decades.
All seven of these wines offered below will be on tasting this Saturday from midday-2pm. Don't miss it!
Hugel Tasting - Saturday 14th October Midday - 2pm (or when the bottles are dry)
2021 Famille Hugel "Gentil"
$29 per bottle ;RRP $33
*A blend of Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. This is one of our top-selling imported wines, owing to its balance and versatility. Light-medium bodied, delicious and terrific value!
2021 Famille Hugel "Classic" Pinot Blanc
$29 per bottle ;RRP $33
Pinot Blanc is now the most widely planted grape variety in Alsace, and it's easy to see why the wines are finding such a widespread appeal. Medium bodied, with a nice texture, integrated acidity, subtle spice notes and a refreshing finish. Pinot Blanc is rarely an especially fruity wine, but it's a terrific all-rounder, and may be served with many foods.
2021 Famille Hugel "Classic" Riesling
$46 per bottle ;RRP $52
Year-in, year-out, Hugel pride themselves on the consistency of their Classic Riesling. Sourced from a number of vineyard sites with differing soils and exposures, this Riesling is perfectly pitched, showing off some roundess, texture and extract so common to Alsace wine.
"Tasted from the cask, the 2021 Riesling Classic opens with a beautifully intense yet pure and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe and elegant fruit. On the palate, the wine is delicate and light but also lush and round, with good acidity and fine phenolic grip. It's not really concentrated, but it's lovely to drink, especially when young."-Stephan Reinhardt,robertparker.com
2020 Famille Hugel "Classic" Pinot Gris
$44 per bottle ;RRP $50
Alsace Pinot Gris is very under-rated we think! Rich, full bodied, and very commonly counter-balanced with a hint of sweetness, the finish is long - but importantly - dry, fresh and concise.
2018 Famille Hugel "Classic" Gewurztraminer
$44 per bottle ;RRP $50
It's difficult to think of a more distinctive wine than Gewurztraminer! With varietal notes of potpourri, fresh roses, lychee, peach, grapes and much more, this is an absolutely delicious bottling with a rich, sweet mid-palate, but a dry, stony and controlled finish.
2012 Famille Hugel Riesling "Grossi Laue"
$132 per bottle ;RRP $150
"Sourced in the best parts of the grand cru Schoenenbourg, so entirely from Keuper marls, the 2012 Riesling "Grossi Laüe" offers a clear, bright and fresh, very delicate and pure bouquet of white fruits with refreshing lemony and finely flinty notes. Full-bodied and quite rich but elegant, this is a fascinating, dense, long and intense salty Riesling with good concentration and a firm mineral and phenolic structure. The phenols could be softer, but I like this straight and robust character. This is a fabulous wine bottled with 12% stated alcohol. Diam cork."-Stephan Reinhardt,robertparker.com
"Fragrant nose with delicate peach and quince aromas that are remarkably fresh for the wine’s age. Broader and bolder on the palate than the nose suggested, this is a concentrated and elegant dry riesling that’s just beginning to give its best. Super food-friendly! Very long, clean finish. Drink or hold."-95 Points,jamesuckling.com
2012 Famille Hugel Riesling "Schoelhammer" Grand Cru
$299 per bottle ;RRP $349"From the heart of the Schoenenbourg, the 2012 Riesling Schoelhammer is beautifully clear, fresh, bright and herbal on the nose that reveals thyme and minty notes intertwined with lemony aromas and notes of finely crushed stones. On the palate, this is a rich, concentrated and complex but elegant and persistently salty Riesling with fine tannins and a long, intense, textured and slightly drying finish. Racked from the gross lees in March and bottled in August 2013, it's to be released in 2023. 12.4% alcohol. Diam cork."-Stephan Reinhardt,robertparker.com
"The nose of this magnificent dry riesling is like a huge basket filled with all manner of yellow fruit, but there are also notes of jasmine, oolong tea and acacia blossom. Then comes the super-elegant palate, the wine moving like a prima ballerina, leaping effortlessly from one side of the stage to the other. Very racy and super-mineral finish that's diamond bright. Drinkable now, but best from 2025."-98 Points,jamessuckling.com
