Greek Whites & Reds Specials + Weekend Tasting

Greek Whites & Reds Specials + Weekend Tasting

Published by The Wine Emporium on 17th Oct 2024

Two salivating weekend lineups heading your way! Our main Saturday tasting (after much fan request and a notable rise in general popularity) will include ten wines all from Greece! We have selected seven whites and three reds that we feel best represent the country and its sun-speckled islands, with crisp racy aromatics and perfumes on the whites that make for fantastic warm weather enjoyment, and full-bodied savoury reds that hold structured profiles perfect for ideal food pairings. Come join host Jennifer from Deja Vu Wine Co from the usual 12 to 2pm timeslot to have a try of them all!

If it's Friday afternoon that you're nearby, and keen for some white and red splashes from an adored South Australian cult producer whose wines have hardly been seen in Queensland (perhaps a very specific desire there, but certainly one we'd recommend), Silent Noise will be on pour from 4 to 7pm! We've always been intrigued by their colourful-looking labels since we began to notice how many customers were asking about them, so we're stoked to finally indulge that demand with a look at their riesling, bianco, chardonnay, shiraz and grenache releases - all will be sitting at some great prices, too! Shop favourite Shane from Vino Bros & Co will be here pouring with a smile, so we hope you can come by and keep him company

Greek Whites & Reds - Specials + Tasting

Saturday 19th October

12 to 2pm

Gaia Notios White Blend -

$22 on special this week; $25 RRP

"Three of the finest Greek white varieties joined their forces for the production of Notios White. These two dominant varieties have been compatible for years and come from neighboring regions. Roditis Alepou originating from the mountainous Aigialeia, at an altitude of approximately 1000 m , and Moschofilero which originates from the Arcadian plateau, are blended harmoniously in all the wineries of the Peloponnese. In this traditional blend we add the now cosmopolitan Assyrtiko from Santorini, raised in a Peloponnesian way. This addition was warmly welcomed because it provided what was missing: strength, length and depth. It can be enjoyed with a cuisine of medium to high intensity, or even on its own as an aperitif, but always in good company." - Winemaker Notes

Gaia 4-6H Agiorgitiko Rosé -

$26 on special this week; $29 RRP

"An appealing and vivid rosé with an intense and aromatic profile which hovers between delicate floral notes of rose petals and fruity flavours of pomegranate and wild blackcurrant. Vibrant and refreshing with lifted wild cherry notes on the finish." - Winemaker Notes

---

Papagiannakos Retsina 2022$24 on special this week; $27 RRP

// 100% Savatiano
"From 70 year-old vines. A redefined version of traditional retsina, with a fine aroma of pine and a strain of lemon. Blond in colour and beautifully balanced this wine speaks to the finest palate. The perfect accompaniment to mediterranean hors d’oeuvres, seafood and fish. Best served at 9 ℃." - Winemaker Notes

---

Argyros Atlantis White Blend 2022 -

$31 on special this week; $35 RRP

// 90% Assyrtiko, 5% Aidani, 5% Athiri

"The dominant Assyrtiko grape, in the blend of the Atlantis White, is ennobled with a small proportion of Aidani and Athiri, to balance the acidity of the fruit. Light yellow color, with vibrant aromas of citrus fruits, lemon blossom, and delicate notes of exotic fruits. Light body, good balance in the mouth thanks to the wine’s acidity and minerality with a pleasant tingling aftertaste. The fermentation is done only in stainless steel vats. Accompanies perfectly fish and seafood, pasta and poultry. Best served at 8-10°C." - Winemaker Notes

---

Douloufakis Dafnios Vidiano 2022 -

$32 on special this week; $36 RRP

"The 2022 Vidiano Dafnios is unoaked, dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. Young, obviously, and exuberant, this is a little unevolved at this stage, but it's still expressive in showing off its fine fruit. And it does have fine fruit, even though it seems a little on the lighter side this year. Beautifully balanced and quite elegant, this also has some grip on the finish to support that lovely fruit. This may be poised to hold well for much of this decade, more or less, but after giving it some settle-down time over the next couple of months, drinking it on the early side will preserve its freshness and youthful exuberance. It may always be best in its youth." - Mark Squires, Wine Advocate

---

Gerovassiliou Malagousia 2021-

$52 on special this week; $58 RRP

"This wine is entirely produced from the Greek grape variety of Malagousia, which was saved from extinction due to the efforts of Vangelis Gerovassiliou. Following skin contact in cold, vinification is carried out in stainless steel tanks at 18 °C, while some is vinified in French oak barrels. The wine is left with its lees for a number of months to gain structure and body. It has a brilliant straw colour with greenish shades and an aroma of matured fruit such as pear, mango and citrus. On the palate the rich flavours of lemon peel enhance the appealing mouthfeel, adding a well-balanced finish." - Winemaker Notes

Gaia Thalassitis Assyrtiko 2022 -

$66 on special this week; $75 RRP

"Thalassitis is produced from Santorini’s indigenous white grape variety, Assyrtiko. All the Assyrtiko grapes selected for Thalassitis originate exclusively from vineyards in the Episkopi, Akrotiri and Pyrgos regions. The vines in these regions are almost 80 years old. The particularly low yield that never exceeds 25 hl/ha combined with the local terrain and variety, result in an exuberant wine with a strong personality. Enjoy it at 10oC with seafood, fish, shellfish or even lamb stewed in lemon sauce, generally with flavors of moderate intensity, where salt, brine or oil predominate. Don’t forget to pour Thalassitis into a wide decanter half an hour before serving. You will definitely be pleased by the result! You may wish to age Thalassitis for a further 2-3 years, which will result in its mineral dimension diminishing, while its fruity and honey aromas will expand." - Winemaker Notes

Thymiopoulos Young Vines Xinomavro 2021 -

$30 on special this week; $34 RRP

"Medium-bodied, classic dried herb, tomato paste, sappy red fruits, raspberry, a little earthy with it. Silty tannin, rhubarb and spice, kind of autumnal too, fleshy and unforced feel, some orange peel, liquorice, and a long and savoury finish. So much character and interest. Pinot-like in a way, and wonderful to drink. I love it." - 93 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

---

Zafeirakis Limniona 2021 -

$52 on special this week; $59 RRP

"The philosophy behind Limniona includes organic farming, low yields per hectare, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and the use of large oak barrels (Aged in a 50-50 mix of new and used oak barrels) to avoid overshadowing the fruit. The result is a refined red wine with plenty of red fruit and an earthly dimension." - Winemaker Notes

---

Gaia Nemea 2020 -

$80 on special this week; $92 RRP

"At the top of the steep Southwestern slopes of Koutsi, we cultivate our Agiorgitiko vines with an eye towards the creation of a red wine of exceptional personality and great aging potential, aiming to take all the compounds needed from a very small amount of grapes. This winemaking is done in such a way that the already dense grape can be expressed in wine, in the most absolute and complete way. The very long extraction after fermentation is the key point of the first phase of the vinification. Afterwards, the new wine will mature for at least of 12 months in new 225-liter French oak casks. The origin of the forest and the degree of burning, the way of cutting the used wood and every small detail, has been examined and chosen so we eventually get a wine with a high complex personality. A deep red-black color, complex and high intense aromatic profile with sides elements of fruit, wood, vanilla and carnation. Mouth filling, volume, body, structure and flavor complement the character of this unusual Nemea." - Winemaker Notes
