- On Jim Barry -

"Jim Barry Wines’ philosophy to winemaking is to own the vineyards to develop the bestfruit flavours possible and retain these flavours during winemaking. The Barry family believe that great wine is made in the vineyard and as such, are committed to owning their own vineyards. This control allows them to develop outstanding fruit quality and flavour which are then retained during winemaking. Over the last 60 years the family has worked to establish a mosaic of sites - 17 vineyards covering 320 hectares in the Clare Valley and two vineyards covering 35 hectares in the Coonawarra. Each unique in soil profile, climate, aspect and elevation." – Producer

2022 Lodge Hill Riesling - $24 on special ; $27 per bottle

"The nose explodes with finger lime juice and pink grapefruit, along with wet slate and orange blossom aromas. Sweet grapefruit flesh drives the palate with mandarin juice, freshly cut lime, and aromatic quince to follow. A slate and mineral backbone and a load of citrus to finish." - Winemaker Notes

"Lime, lavender, aniseed, lemon zest. A good bit of crunch and zingy citrus flavour, lemon zest, powdery texture, acidity slightly awry, but adding some punch and vigour, and a juicy citrus finish of good length, Quite big in flavour and intensity, and a good drink." - 92+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2012 Lodge Hill Riesling Museum Release - $35 on special ; $40 per bottle

"It’s spicy and a little sweaty/earthy, but looking through the mist of a young wine there’s a core of intense acidity, a chalky phenolic texture and large scale sweet fruit power – almost tropical in flavour, though with some more traditional citrus tang. Plenty to hang on to here, with more to come. Kerpow." - 95+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (from original review, Sep 2012)

2022 Assyrtiko - $31 on special ; $36 per bottle

"White floral aromas combine with orange rind, lemon zest, sweet freshly cut grass and lifted bath salts. A classic profile with the nose carrying through to the palate. The 2022 Assyrtiko has a talc-like texture, with a subtle saline finish." - Winemaker Notes

"Nice sort of thyme and aniseed perfume, green apple and lemon sorbet. Intense lemon zesty flavour with a chalky texture, mouth-watering acidity, and a juicy tangy finish of good length, a quinine-like bite in the aftertaste. A very good release in 2022." - 93 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2022 The Florita Riesling - $52 on special ; $59 per bottle

"Aromas of freshly cut lime, with fleshy lemon and grapefruit juice. Intense focus and purity, with a glass rod like structure through the palate. All framed in florals and fresh lime juice. This wine commands respect, with a finish that is long, powerful and seamless. A wine for the ages." - Winemaker Notes

2015 The Florita Riesling Cellar Release - $63 on special ; $72 per bottle

"Released after 6 years in bottle, and you can totally understand, when you drink this, why this is a wise move. This is gloriously toasty: yellow flowers (there's a buttercup vibe through the finish), hinoki, Golden Delicious apples, preserved lemons, yellow peach, pulverised quartz, saline acidity and a creamy undercurrent of crushed nuts. This is verging on sublime. Or perhaps it just is." - 96 Points, Erin Larkin, James Halliday Wine Companion

"Mid-yellow colour, bright, with a lovely mature buttered-toast, beeswax and burnt lime bouquet, young for its age, the palate still tight and steely, crisp and dry, with pronounced acidity cleansing and drying the finish, which is long and refreshing. I'd serve it with a fillet of pan-fried fish. A long-term wine that must have been somewhat austere when it was young. It's superb now." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2019 McRae Wood Shiraz - $52 on special ; $59 per bottle

"Dark and broody aromas of plum and blackberry with sweet earth, spice, and hawthorn on the nose. An effortless approach and line, with sinewy tannins greeting on entry, flowing all the way to the back palate. Up front, this wine has all the hallmarks of the McRae Wood profile, then a wave of elegance, florals and spice, and a classic brooding finish." - Winemaker Notes

2014 McRae Wood Shiraz Cellar Release - $63 on special ; $72 per bottle

"First made in '92 as a junior brother to the Armagh from an estate vineyard planted in '64. It sits well in the mouth, but its quality comes into high relief on the finish and aftertaste. Here dark berry fruits, spice, licorice and leather all dance a jig together. It's on the way to greatness." - 94 Points, James Halliday Wine Companion

"An old-school, classically styled shiraz that has an assertive savory-framed core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors. The nose is quite pared back, and the palate unleashes more showy power and spicy oak influence. A weighty finish." - 93 Points, James Suckling

2018 The Armagh Shiraz - $399 on special ; $460 per bottle

"A meaty, savoury, spiced nose, something so welcoming about it, warm and friendly with a touch of perfume, dark chocolate, cinnamon and pink peppercorn to the blackcurrant, damsons and plums. Rich, ample and generous, yet delivered with such supple and velvety-soft tannins. This has an elegance to it, a cool sophistication in terms of the profile - neat and tidy, quite linear right now, brimming with energy, not yet fully expansive or loose, but quietly controlled and calm. It's confident though with invigorating acidity and I love the focus, detail and the purity of fruit. Sweet red fruits - strawberries, raspberries and red cherries with a slight balsamic, pomegranate edge that is so delicious. Juicy, crunchy, succulent and ripe but with an effortless edge to it. Supremely drinkable and likeable - what a gorgeous wine! A quality vintage and excellent winemaking skill on show. Ageing 18 months in French oak." - 100 Points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter
