Rosé is a varietal that keeps us on our toes more than most - for a wine that was (or perhaps still is) considered 'easy' by many in terms of its style and nature, one can find incredible variety, breadth and depth nowadays from many of the great wine regions! We hope to showcase this sheer scope this Saturday (4th March) at our usual afternoon tasting from 12 to 2pm! Have a gander at what will be on pour, including expressions from Australia, France and Italy, each so flavourful and harnessing some of the world's great grapes, from Grenache and Tempranillo, to Mataro, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. It should be a hot one, so come by and take part in our rosé adventure!
La Spinetta Il Rosé di Casanova (Tuscany) - $29 on special ; $39 RRP
// Wine Emporium Exclusive!
"Inspired by Provencal Rosés, the Rivetti decided to produce one rosé from their porfolio. The fascinating characteristics of Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile, permitted us to create a wine that shows great character, an intense aroma, and which is very pleasant to drink. It has a floral and fruity bouquet with hints of citrus and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is wonderfully fresh and delicate with satisfying minerality and an all-embracing acidity." - Winemaker Notes
"Spinetta’s 2019 Il Rosé di Casanova is stunning in the glass, wafting up with a seductive bouquet, mixing lime and ripe melon with crushed strawberries. It floods the palate with spicy red fruits, complemented by juicy citrus and brisk acids, which keep the expression wonderfully fresh. The finish is long, as an air of minerals and fresh florals hover above salty minerals which beg you to take another sip." - 92 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous
2022 Nocturne Sangiovese Tempranillo Rosé (Margaret River) - $29 on special ; $33 RRP
"This is mainly Sangiovese (88%), with a sliver of Tempranillo (8%) and the balance in Grenache, though the latter isn’t on the label. A classically pale colour here, though a step up from the ultra-frail Provence-styled wines of today, more a light dusky rose gold. The nose is lifted and fragrant, with aromas of wild red berries, pomegranate, tangerine peel, white peach and rose petals. This is dry but far from austere, with a light plump of texture giving a suppleness in the mid-palate, some cherry and redcurrant notes joining the fray. A subtly persistent line of acidity gives this shape through the finish, dry, savoury and long on flavour." - Young Gun of Wine
"The 88% sangiovese is destemmed and left on lees for three months; the 8% tempranillo is whole-bunch pressed to old oak. The remaining 4% is grenache. This comes together beautifully. Fragrant with florals, red licorice, freshly grated ginger and a tinge of red berries. The palate is perfectly modulated between the super-refreshing acidity and its creamy texture." - 95 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
2022 Charles Melton Rosé of Virginia (Barossa Valley) - $30 on special ; $34 RRP
"A similar vivid pink of the 2021 version. Perfumed, a mix of tropical guava noted and more vinous, serious aromatics. Again, beautifully weighted in the mouth with the gentlest touch of grip and a length of flavour with red fruits following all the way through." - Winemaker Notes
"Destemmed (not crushed), 3-day cold soak, free run juice drained and settled; 4-6 week cool fermentation. The vivid magenta hue (in a clear glass bottle) is, to put it mildly, jaw-dropping. But it's far more than show; it's wondrously fruity, yet bone dry, its rainbow of small red berries enough to stop those who 'don't like rosés' in their tracks." - 97 Points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
2021 Domaine La Suffrene Bandol Rosé (Provence) - $45 on special ; $52 RRP
// 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Cinsault, 20% Grenache, 10% Carignan
"Domaine la Suffrene Bandol Rose offers freshness and subtlety. A clear and shiny robe, slightly salmon-colored. A delicate nose of candied citrus fruit, spices. A full balanced mouth, fresh, underlined by a nice aromatic persistence and great finesse." - Winemaker Notes
"This wine is on the cusp of moving from youthful freshness to slightly more mature fruit. The dark cherry and full weighty structure plays with the more exotic fruit and creamy notes and is balanced by youthful, crunchy wild berries with their delicate length and fresh acidity. The weighty structure finishes with textural phenolics. Although drinking well now, the fruit will continue to integrate into a seamless complex wine." - Elizabeth Gabay MW, Decanter // Rated Best in Show Twice By Decanter
2021 Nervi Conterno Nebbiolo Rosato (Piedmont) - $58 on special ; $65 RRP
"There is beautiful tension here suspended between the aromatics of citrus, red fruits and touches of floral personality. Nervi, being one of the oldest estates in all of Gattinara (Piedmont), is now owned by Roberto Conterno; a legendary Italian winemaker who holds a deep knowledge, love and experience with all things Nebbiolo, so you can be assured there is gorgeous depth to the tannins and acidity on this must-try '21 vintage. Stock's limited with this one, so definitely grab hold of one if you're a fan of the region or simplu looking to try a rosé at its most unique and sumptuous" - TWE
2021 Clos St Magdeleine Cassis Rosé (Southern France) - $69 on special ; $79 RRP
"This wine is produced from very beautiful seaside terroirs, located on the slopes of Cap Canaille, and near the Arène beach. It expresses characteristic notes of white-fleshed fruit and aromas of peach. Its complex aromatic palette is linked to the 3 grape varieties that make it up. Its saline and iodized minerality supported by fine bitters will allow it to accompany a meal around Mediterranean fish, or a starter of Provençal vegetables. It can also age for a few years in the cellar." - Winemaker Notes
2021 Domaines Ott Clos Mireille Rosé (Provence) - $73 on special ; $83 RRP
"The wine reveals a pink pastel hue with pearly highlights and an expressive, crisp, fruity nose redolent of citrus, boxwood, white fruit and tangy mango. After a lively attack, the palate appears taut, unctuous and elegant with a typical fresh summer fruit vibrancy. Clos Mireille 2021 is a rosé that bursting with freshness and delicious flavours. Pair with all Mediterranean cuisine - particularly carpaccio and tartars." - Winemaker Notes
"Clos Mireille’s 124 acres of vines are planted in schist and clay soils within view of the sea. This wine is reticent at first, though a magnetic hint of salted cherry paste suggests what’s to come. With a day of air, pithy grapefruit flavors and cinnamon spice come out to play, sliding into sea-salt and floral notes in the finish. Complex, intensely flavorful and still restrained, this has mouthwatering tannins that last without encumbering the wine." - 95 Points, Wine & Spirits
2020 Chateau Simone Rosé (Provence) - $87 on special ; $100 RRP
// Grenache 45%, mourvèdre 30%, cinsaut 5% + Secondary varieties 20% including syrah, castet, manosquin, carignan, various muscatel
"Generous yet sophisticated with aromas of hazelnuts, clotted cream, orange curd and pears. Some cardamom, clove and white chocolate, too. It’s full-bodied with a deliciously buttery, toasty yet fresh palate. Long and spicy finish. Drink now or hold." - 94 Points, JamesSuckling.com
"From old vines grown on north-facing slopes, it's nevertheless on the fuller side, with ample weight, richness and texture, fermented and aged in a combination of oak foudres and concrete eggs. Strawberry and raspberry fruit dominates, softened and rounded by the extended elevage that wine receives, yet still vibrant and compelling." - 93 Points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
