Boasting some of Europe's most enviable microclimates and soils that contribute to the country's rich viticutural heritage, as well as lend its wines a sense of drive and balance, you can always rely on Spain for a terrific bottle of white or red! Whether it's the racy minerality and sandy textures found in a Verdejo or Vinho Verde, or the fruit-driven robust opulence of a classic Tempranillo or Garnacha (Grenache) from Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat or beyond. These are always expressions that we really enjoy discussing with fans of Spanish styles, as well as introducing them to newcomers looking for particular stand-outs - we're excited for the chance to do both at this Saturday's tasting (29th June), with a variation of recent favourites being poured from 12 to 2pm (with all bottles on special for the next week!) We hope you can make it, and join host Steve Beale from importers The Spanish Acquisition, and see the scope of what this sunblessed country can offer to any wine lover out there.

Telmo Rodriguez "Basa" Verdejo 2022 - $32 on special this week; $36 RRP
"This gorgeous dry-grown Verdejo is blended with a little of floral Viura to lighten and lift. Basa is lovely, uncomplicated, and texturally pleasing. Basa smells of feijoa and fresh-cut pear with the faintest tropical wash and a gentle green herb tuck. The palate is mid-weight and of good length with a great mix of fruit flesh, earth and gently nutty tannin running out on natural acid. Textured without overt fructose, it’s savoury, with minerality and good length, and perfectly blends richness and line." - Importer Notes
Pequenos Rebentos Vinho Verde Alvarinho 2022 - $32 on special this week; $36 RRP
"On the surface, ripe crab-apple, nashi pear, greengage and cress. Below the surface, jasmine, sage, cardamom and curry leaf give depth, charm and interest. Grassy fresh-tilled green herbs, and a touch of nutty roundness on both nose and palate and yellow sandy depth. For a light wine it has good depth and a nice pocket of roundness early, before easing to mineral-herbal line out back. It has a smooth gliding texture from the Trajadura, and a sweet-and sour grapefruit acid finish, giving the wine swing and zing." - Importer Notes
Abeica Chulato Tempranillo Joven 2022 - $25 on special this week; $29 RRP
"Coupage of native varieties from our vineyards located in the Sonsierra Rioja. The varieties come together to give a clear definition of a young, fresh and fruity wine. Mulberry colour, with violet tones. Aromatic and frank, the fruit explodes on the nose. Notes of banana, peach, blackberries wild currants and raspberries, with the aromas of carbonic maceration classics." - Producer Notes
Herdade do Rocim Mariana Tinto 2021 - $28 on special this week; $32 RRP
"Touriga Nacional 40%, Aragonez 30%, Alicante Bouschet 20% and Trincadeira 10% are manually harvested in 12kg crates. At the winery, grapes are sorted, fully destemmed and gently crushed. After a period of cold maceration, fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks at 24°C, and the wines ages 6 months in French oak. Deep ruby colour. Mace spice relieves the vanilla and black cherry density you expect here. Fluid, with good presence, but balanced without any sense of heftiness. Soft, dry, shapely, with nice structure, fresh, clean and great value. The wine has a lovely order: earthen-floral smells of the place gain skins, then fruit richness flowing along a tannin-leather thread, then tapering to finish acid-fresh and lovely." - Importer Note
Alvaro Palacios "Carmins del Priorat" Garnatxa 2021 - $69 on special this week; $78 RRP
Blend: 40% Garnacha, 30% Samso, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah
"Vibrant, youthful and brambly nose that is very fruit-expressive, with lots of red cherries, pomegranate, potpourri and hints of oyster-shell minerality and coffee that extend to a crunchy, medium-bodied palate, framed by juicy, fresh tannins. Bright, silky and unassumingly approachable now." - 92 Points, James Suckling
Remelluri Rioja Tempranillo Reserva 2015 - $105 on special this week; $120 RRP
"The estate red 2015 Reserva was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from their 86 hectares of vineyards. It’s from an early harvest after a warm and dry year that achieved perfect ripeness with some rain at the end of the cycle. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats and matured in barrel for 21 months. It combines youth with development, power with elegance and comes through as clean and defined, with a medium to full-bodied palate, focused flavors and a dry but lively finish." - 94 Points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate
Dominio de Pingus "Flor de Pingus" 2020 - $285 on special this week; $320 RRP
"There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins." - 94 Points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Niepoort Ruby Port NV 375mL- $35 on special this week; $39 RRP
"Dark red in color, with a fresh vibrant aroma of dark fruits which follows through on the palate along with a mineral character, a youthful wine with good extract and great balance, offering superb drinkability." - Winemaker Notes
