In what has turned into quite the rainy run in towards the Easter long weekend, we've been inspired to put a shine on things and bring you all something a little different for our Saturday tasting, putting together a whole bracket of unique white varietals from around the globe!
Starting with the bright and grippy Chateau de Castelnau Picpoul from France's south-eastern coast, we'll take a journey over to Alsace, with the Gustave Lorentz Pinot Blanc and Trapet Gewürztraminer, through to a classic Loire Valley textural Muscadet from Jo Landron, a 100% Carricante Etna Bianco from Sicily, and Aligoté from Burgundy's Domaine Cruchandeau. There's even one very unique Cortese expression from Albino Rocca in Barbarbesco (a favourite at our recent event looking at their wines, shining bright on its own even amongst all their Nebbiolos), and a juicy new Savagnin from Foreign Friends in Beechworth, Victoria!
We're really looking forward to this, and hope to put a white wine shine on your Easter Saturday!

Castelnau Picpoul de Pinet 2022 - $21 on special; $24 RRP
"Bright light yellow color with green reflections. The nose develops aromas of citrus zest and minerality. Opens to reveal hints of passion fruit, slightly minty. The attack is round, on candied citrus. The mid-palate is ample. The finish is elegantly iodized." - Winemaker Notes

Gustave Lorentz Pinot Blanc 2022 - $30 on special; $34 RRP
"A delicate bouquet which exhales white flower, honey, melon and citrus aromas. The mouth is lively, dry, pleasant and perfectly balanced with a well-integrated acidity and a touch of minerality. Very easy to drink, it is also easy to pair with many dishes as it matches very well with appetizers, fish and shellfish, as well as with white meat. 70% Pinot auxerrois 30% Pinot Blanc" - Winemaker Notes

Foreign Friends Savagnin 2023 - $33 on special; $37 RRP
"This Foreign Friend has travelled far to meet you... Your Savagnin grapees began their journey amongst the honey hued trees of the high country. From there, a small parcel spent a few days on skins before collectively agein in French oak over the winter and spring, arriving here to make your acquaintance today." - Winemaker Notes

Jo Landron 'Amphibolite' Muscadet 2021 - $43 on special; $49 RRP
// Biodynamic
"This cuvée derives its name from the greenish, metamorphic bedrock (amphibolite) that dominates the soils in which it is grown. Produced from vines aged between 35 and 40 years, this unique wine was vinified with only a short period on lees, as Jo Landron wanted to retain as much freshness and minerality as possible. Only minor doses of sulphur were used to block malo. Bottling occurred early (in March), and without filtration, to retain the earth-to-glass essence of the wine. With some lovely textural padding this year it's an ultra-pure, racy expression of Muscadet loaded with white floral notes and all kinds of citrus underpinned by the iodine minerality that is a hallmark of this cuvée." - Importer Notes

Pietradolce Etna Bianco 2022 - $49 on special; $56 RRP
// 100% Carricante
"Its lively aromas highlight the freshness and lovely character of the Pietradolce Etna Bianco. Because of the volcanic soil, its mineral component and the unique climate conditions, this Etna white has the pronounced minerality and unabashed acidity typical to wines of this territory. Pairs well with seafood and grilled fresh fish." - Winemaker Notes
---
Domaine Cruchandeau Bourgogne Aligote 'Le Village' 2022 - $52 on special; $59 RRP
// 100% Aligote
"From 50 year old vines in the hills above Nuits St Georges, this Aligote is fresh and spicy with green apple acidity. Bright, crisp almost crunchy fruit and a deep, floral lingering finish carried out long by the limestone minerality." - Winemaker Notes
---
Domaine Trapet Riquewihr Gewürztraminer 2022 - $59 on special; $67 RRP
// Biodynamic
What we love about this wine, and Trapet in general, is their focus, balance and fruit drive. The gently savoury finish here accompanies some mouthwatering minerality - nothing too heavy or sweet, just the right touch. So much for Gewürz lovers, and aromatic white fans in general, to dig into here. The palate just goes on, and on, and on... easily one of our yearly favs from Alsace - Our Notes

Albino Rocca Cortese 2021 - $64 on special; $73 RRP
"As far as we know, this unique wine is the only Cortese grown within the boundaries of Barbaresco, so perhaps the fact that the Roccas grow it should be clue enough that we’re onto something special. The one-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines is rooted in Montegrosso d’Asti (in Barbaresco, just south of Asti) on clay and limestone soils. The wine was aged in a mix of stainless steel and mature French oak (just six months in barrel). Angelo Rocca was a great fan of Burgundy and went as far as planting Chardonnay vines in the family’s home village of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio. Yet it’s the estate’s Cortese that stands out for us. Rocca always believed in crafting a structured, food-friendly Cortese from low yields, and his family have taken the wine to another level, weaving in complex mineral-savoury hints, great texture and layers of citrus-pith and spice-flecked fruit. From an outstanding Piemonte vintage, you can expect layers of fresh orchard, ripe white peach and orange oil notes, underpinned by chalky freshness and some phenolic chewiness on the finish." - Bibendum, Importer Notes
