Description / Reviews

"Ovello is located in the town of Barbaresco and is one of the oldest and largest historic crus of Barbaresco. Vigna Loreto is one of our oldest family vineyards of Nebbiolo on the southwest slope overlooking the Tanaro River, it is 45 years old.

Vigna Loreto is only half a hectare, which gives us a total annual production of 2,600 bottles which are aged entirely in one large oak barrel. This picturesque vineyard has clay-limestone soil, but also has the presence of sand, which brings out the elegance of Nebbiolo. Vigna Loreto has fresh and fruity aromas with a light tannic structure and a wonderful finesse of flavors." - Albino Rocca, Winemaker

"Barbaresco’s Ovello Cru spans a ridge with both slopes planted to vines. Within this large Cru are several delimited parcels (historical plots, if you like). Rocca’s Vigna Loreto is one of them, a tiny plot that is effectively a monopole. Vines here are around 55 years old, and Rocca first vinified the parcel as a separate bottling in 1990.

Sitting on the sunnier, south-west side of the ridge, the nearby Tanaro River provides moderating influence. This results in cooler nights than the ridge’s twin side. The clay and limestone soils are also sandier and lighter than in the rest of Ovello, giving the wines here far more finesse. On the other hand, vines from Loreto must be cropped at 10 hl/ha less than other Ovello vines if the wine is bottled under the parcel name, so this wine balances its finesse with real density." - Bibendum, Importer

"The 2022 Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is powerful and ample, yet also quite translucent. Potent tannins make themselves felt but are beautifully integrated into the wine’s fabric. Blood orange, spice, tobacco, dried flowers and mint are nicely laced together. This is such a classy wine.” - 94 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Barbaresco. Just mid ruby. Sweetly oaked cherry and really embryonic on the nose. The complexity comes out with aeration. Concentrated, juicy raspberry fruit in the grip of firm but tasty tannins that will need time to soften.” - 17/20 Points, Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson
