Time has worked its magic. Cristal is a giant with a patient heart. It is still brimming with youth, even after many long years spent resting in the cellars. The chalk has concentrated its texture and given it its unique energy and surprising depth. Its pure tension, opulence and remarkable persistence take it above and beyond any limits. It asserts its presence, flowing as sweetly as a mountain stream, yet structured by the strength and concentration of the vintage. From the chalky depths, Cristal has forged its identity in these limestone soils which reflect the rays of the summer sun and capture the soft light of winter. Cristal has a restrained strength and a pervasive purity, like a lithe ballerina’s impossibly graceful leap through the air. A reverberation of bright fruit, an initial pulse which penetrates to the core and beckons contemplation. "The 2008 Cristal is just starting to open and into its first plateau of what is likely to be a very long drinking window. Bright and intensely saline, with terrific depth, Cristal shows everything that makes this vintage so appealing, namely a captivating mix of fruit intensity and bright, piercing acids. As alluring as the 2008 is today, it also needs time to be at its very best. Roederer launched the more open 2009 ahead of the 2008, which means the 2008 saw ten years on the lees, quite a bit longer than most vintages, all of which it needed. The 2008 seems to presage a new era at Roederer in which the wines have been consistently brilliant. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.
