Description / Reviews

"The Serra, or the other side of Barolo Marcarini, takes its name from a historic area of ancient origin, whose soils, poor in organic substances, but rich in mineral salts and microelements, are capable of giving wines of good color, good structure, sapid and never excessively tannic. The particular microclimate is characterized by a slight ventilation with movements of fresh and dry air." - Marcarini, Winemaker

"The 2021 Barolo La Serra is a gorgeous wine from Marcarini. Macerated cherry, spice, orange peel and star anise give the 2021 a decidedly exotic profile, especially in its aromatics. Barolos from La Serra can be a bit angular, but the 2021 here is distinguished by its textural depth and persistence. This is a terrific showing." - 94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"La Morra. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Headily perfumed and multi-layered nose. Compact and not fully open yet on the palate, it still conveys real complexity and depth. Layered and long, with long-lasting sandy tannins. A wine worth waiting for. " - 17.5/20, Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson

"A subtle wine with a restrained nose of Parma violets, austere cherry stones, licorice and balsamic. Medium-bodied with elegant, velvety tannins, chewy acidity, a huge structure and concentrated fruit. Tight, harmonious aftertaste. Try from 2026." - 95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling

"Sitting above the celebrated Brunate MGA, La Serra is a fresher and more ventilated site, yet of equal esteem at Marcarini – the estate first bottled it separately in 1973, and it sees a lengthy submerged cap maceration of up to 45 days. This sings with the estate’s signature fruit purity. Raspberry and strawberry are suffused with nutmeg, cinnamon and liquorice. Very pretty with equal depth as floral potpourri floods the palate. Crispy acidity offsets the ripe fruit sweetness. Elegant in proportions with a good dose of firm, chalky tannins providing appropriate frame, it lingers with distinct salinity." - 94 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter
