For the second week running, we look forward to an evening tasting in the middle of the week; this time Napa Valley is where we land, with six options from Bogle Vineyards that are always equal parts charming and consistent. Hosted by Jody Bogle from the estate, come join her between 4 and 6pm this evening (Wednesday 20th), as she looks to show her family's dedication to crafting well-priced white and red options from this sun-kissed part of the wine world. The buttery Chardonnay, and juicy plush takes on Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are always fast-movers from our shelves, but here for the first time is their Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah and Chenin Blanc. All sit at the same price, and will be on special for the coming week; very appropriate choices for the cold weeks ahead!
For this Saturday, we felt it had been too long since we did our last deep dive into the diversity and allure of Beaujolais, so it's only right we do so with one of the region's very oldest names! Château de La Chaize are based in the Odenas commune, within one of the province's most lavish manors and adjourning gardens (constructed in 1676, and since listed as a historical monument), and have gone by a single vineyard parcel-by-parcel approach for multiple generations. Dividing plots between the Brouilly, Fleurie and Morgon appellations, all fruit is harvested by hand and vinified separately with native yeasts and low intervention to best coax the silky structural potential of the Gamay grape. The entry-level trio have made homes on our shelves many times in the past (some of the very best examples to introduce someone to the grape and how the three areas differ stylistically), and we are keen to pop open their premium labels for the first time, including the fascinating 'Clos de La Chaize Monopole'. Join in between 12 and 2pm (Saturday 23rd) for a well-timed spot of Gamay cheer!

The palate is clean with an elegant, lightly extracted texture. The juice feels infused with no tannic harshness. It is a wine that is more slender than thick, which may seem fluid and ephemeral, but its structure carries through with a brilliant freshness. This is an easy-drinking Morgon that expresses a certain lightness of style." - Winemaker Notes

Brouilly Lieu-Dit 'Combiliaty' 2022 -
$49 on special this week ($55 RRP)
"Facing South-East on shallow granite soil, the cadastral place Combiliaty is one of the largest terroirs in the Brouilly appellation. Powerful, virile, Combiliaty wine is made for aging. The nose reveals black fruits, black cherry, plum and spices. The terroir mark is provided by the charcoal and mineral smoke side. The nose remains fair and precise; the fruit keeps this greediness of reading. The mouth is delivered with a good chewiness and density. A square and compact mouth frame for the moment. However, this texture is well enveloped by a nice fat. The tannins are more in relief without bringing austerity. It is a wine for laying down par excellence that will relax over time." - Winemaker Notes

Brouilly Lieu-dit 'La Chaize' Monopole 2020 -
$69 on special this week ($79 RRP)
"Magnificent steep hillside behind the Castle. In the center of the plot, the Clos de La Chaize, protected by its walls built in 1676. The soil is made of porphyroid granite which gives elegance and length to the wines produced on this terroir. Shimmering scents of lily and viola, notes of black cherry, spices. The juice is fruity with a delicate finish. The granite gives off the scent of stones heated by the sun. Great texture and ageing potential." - Winemaker Notes
"Tremendous spicy and balsamic complexity overlays the ripe (but not a jot overripe) blackberry fruit of this concentrated and imposing Brouilly. Such a beautiful silky texture it’s hard to tear yourself away! Keeps pumping out the fruit at the very long, intense finish. Should age extremely well." - 95 Points, James Suckling

Clos de La Chaize Monopole 2020 -
$395 on special this week ($449 RRP)
(Very limited availability)
"In the heart of the Brouilly appellation, in the commune of Odenas and the place called "La Chaize" Monopole, the Clos de La Chaize is ideally located behind the Château, on a rectangular plot of land backing onto the hillside, remarkably exposed to the East. This plot is composed of Gamay Noir vines, planted on a porphyroid granite soil, which gives elegance and length to the wines. The nose is delivered on a palette of black fruits such as black cherry and blackberry. The nose is juicy, defined by a very beautiful ripeness of the harvest. The complexity is brought by the spices, pepper and balsamic notes of the aging. The woodiness is just right; it underlines with great finesse the definition of the aromas. The palate is ample with a fleshy heart that has flesh and consistency. It is a wine with a nice concentration with a quality tannic support that tightens the mouth. The fruit remains juicy and quenches the thirst of this noble material. It is a wine for laying down par excellence that will evolve positively over ten years." - Winemaker Notes
"One of the new giants of Beaujolais that nonetheless retains the lightness of touch and elegance of these wines. Enormous concentration of sour cherry, cassis and forest berry aromas is married to an expertly crafted tannin structure that is so detailed and so fascinating. Incredibly long, compact and energetic finish that leaves you breathless. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes grown in a genuine clos that is completely surrounded by a high stone wall." - 98 Points, James Suckling
