Jeffrey Grosset's wines don't clamor, shout or stamp. They prefer to have a conversation with you. There is a sense of focus, precision and enduring vitality to these more cerebral creations. Since laying down his mark in the Clare Valley in 1981, he has steered for Riesling that one will remember, more so than one idly sipped on. James Halliday put it perfectly when describing the man as he who 'wears the unchallenged mantle of Australia’s foremost riesling maker.' As always come the start of spring, we're delighted to have received our allocation of his latest creations - including the 2026 expressions of annual favourites like the Alea, Springvale and, of course, the Polish Hill (regarded as the most collected riesling in the country!)
These remain benchmarks for all the right reasons; aromatic persistence, steely throughline, and chalk minerality married with fleshy final flicks of lemongrass, citric pith and white pepper. Jeffrey and co. are famously strict on organic organic and biodynamic viticulture, feeling it is the way forward in creating the very best representation of the Clare's warm days and cooling nights - this always comes through in spades. Further on the release is the bright and juicy Apiana Fiano, plush and savoury Nereus Shiraz/Nero d'Avola blend, an impressive first release of their Lenswood Chardonnay(a counterpart to the Piccadilly from previous years), and the multi-layered Gaia Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc blend. This 300-metre corridor of hard red rock, with poor orange-red topsoil, seemed an unlikely home for riesling. I believed in its potential despite not really knowing what to expect. In this case, a more European winemaking approach has brought out the best expression. Pretty and floral on the nose, this seventeenth vintage from Rockwood Vineyard showcases the European-style expression, a subtle yet enticing generosity. "The 2024 Nereus comprises a blend of Shiraz and Nero d'Avola and is typically perfumed with rose petals and raspberry compote, graphite, asphalt and blueberries. "Riesling grown biodynamically at Grosset Springvale Vineyard (Watervale sub-region), established in 2001 (25 years old). Hand harvested, free run juice, with no fining. This site has surprised me. I chose it as a typical, if cooler, Watervale site, thin red loam over limestone. Only years later did the vines’ roots reach ancient slate bedrock beneath; a possible explanation for the minerality evident in recent releases. Lifted, elegant intensity with quintessential Watervale character – lime blossom, lemon and lime citrus, with minerality most likely from roots reaching slate. Balanced lime pith and brightness deliver structure, carrying to a persistent finish. Biodynamic farming nurtured near-oasis conditions, delivering grapes from limestone and slate. "Lime, white flowers, cut fennel, green cardamom, a light spicy note. Quite juicy, but there’s also a light chalky grip here, white pepper and apple cucumber coolness, lime rind, a little quinine bite and perfume on a finish of excellent length. "Riesling grown biodynamically at Grosset Polish Hill Vineyard (Polish Hill River sub-region), established in 1996 (30 years old). Hand harvested, free run juice, with no fining. Planted on unyielding hard rock (slate), the site has always demanded hand-working and patience to match. The vines have responded by becoming more resilient and the grapes more expressive, both evident in this release. Wonderfully aromatic and intensely fragrant with lifted lime blossom and the smell of slate. Full-throttle power meets the vineyard’s finesse. Intense lime drives the mid-palate with precision, supported by chalky minerality and bone-dry structure. Persistent length reveals citrus complexity.
