Dog Point Release New Vintage Trio + Back Vintage Specials!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 20th Jan 2024

In a great region so overflowing with quality and masterful winemakers at every turn, it takes a very special house to stand out amongst the crowd - Dog Point have achieved that in spades for years now! This top team from across the pond, holding some of Marlborough's most enviable and picturesque vineyards, have just arrived in with three fresh vintages for their big three favourites - crisp Sauvignon Blanc, full-bodied Chardonnay, and ripe plush Pinot Noir, each one pitch perfect for the warm summer days ahead. These aren't wines to skimp out on complexity though either - the welcome flavour concentration of each (particularly with the Chardonnay and Pinot) make these very suitable for cellaring for several years too!

Also discounted is the Section 94 from 2011, the estate's most complex expression of barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, and last available bottles of back-vintage Chardonnay from 2012. All will be on special for the next week, available on our website through the links below, or straight from the shelves in-store ?

Sauvignon Blanc 2023 - $26 on special; $30 RRP

// Certified Organic

"This classic wine offers a clear style contrast to Section 94, Dog Point's complex, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc. Estate-grown at several vineyards in the Wairau Valley, it is hand-harvested, fermented and lees-aged in stainless steel tanks, but handled without oak. The thought-provoking 2023 vintage is arguably the best yet. Pale straw colour. Pure and bright perfume with aromatics of grapefruit and white peach. Subtle smoke and gravelly tones layered over this create a complexity beyond the immediate fruit profile. Juicy, plush, white fleshed fruit pour across the palate with a refreshing and defined acidity balancing the sunny fruit profile, finishing clean and dry." - Winemaker Notes

"Bright, fresh wine with typical varietal/regional characters including capsicum, gooseberry, lemongrass and passionfruit. Appealing purity with a perfect sweet/sour balance. A pleasure to taste." - 95 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

Chardonnay 2021 - $44 on special; $50 RRP

// Certified Organic

"This classy wine is estate-grown and hand-harvested on the south side of the Wairau Valley, fermented and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (typically 10 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. The 2021 vintage is still unfolding. Deep straw in colour, it's a fresh and subtle expression with cool, citrus tones, hazelnuts and lanolin notes. The impact of 18 months elevage adding elements of oatmeal and brioche. Bracing, fresh, ripe, citrus leads on the palate. Lovely, salivating acidity gives the wine drive and focus before more subtle creamy textures build on the finish. Tightly coiled with generous concentration, it will reward a few extra years in the cellar before drinking. Drinks beautifully now or can be cellared for 10+ years." - Winemaker Notes

"Intense chardonnay with lemon curd, oyster shell, ginger, struck flint and attractively integrated spicy oak flavours. Youthful wine with bright, juicy acidity that brings energy while driving a lengthy finish. Classy chardonnay. Should develop well with bottle age." - 96 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

Pinot Noir 2021 - $52 on special; $59 RRP

// Certified Organic

"This classy, finely structured red is estate-grown on the south side of the Wairau Valley, hand-picked and matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (typically 30-35 per cent new). The 2021 vintage is one of the most impressive yet. Deep ruby colour, with dark and brooding aromas of doris plum, baking spices and brambles, with dried herbal notes and musky florals of old fashioned roses. Bold, dark fruits lead on the palate, with an energy and drive that offers great enjoyment. The acidity brings freshness and the supple, fine-grained tannins that build show fine pedigree from a great year for Marlborough Pinot Noir. This powerful and concentrated expression is bound to reward further cellaring. It should prove to be long lived." - Winemaker Notes

"Intense, appealing pinot noir with subtle floral aromas together with concentrated red berry, dark chocolate, liquorice, wood smoke and spicy oak flavours. Powerful wine with obvious cellaring potential." - 95 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc 2011 - $42 on special; $47 RRP

// Certified Organic

"A complex array of flint, smoke and gravel are ever present, accompanied by a ripe spectrum of yellow fruit, jasmine and lemon blossom. With bottle age, the wine also shows biscuit and honeyed evolution. Linear and focussed structure that builds and rounds on the back palate. Rich and generous texture from extended ageing on lees in barrel. An exciting wine with great energy and drive as well as years ahead in the cellar also. Drinks beautifully now." - Winemaker Notes

"The most complex of Marlborough sauvignons is looking the goods in this warmer vintage. There's a heady reductive layer that delivers flinty grapefruit notes and lemon pith. The palate texture is superb; starts on point and builds weight and layers of texture through the mid-palate with abundant gooseberry and lime flavor, then finishes pure, focused and true." - 96 Points, James Suckling

Chardonnay 2012 - $58 on special; $66 RRP

// Certified Organic

"Every year, Dog Point do a cellar release of their 10 year old wines - this 2012 maintains a superb freshness with many layers of fruit from bottle-age" - TWE (recently tasted) "Lifted aromas of grapefruit, fresh lime and a degree of minerality combine with notes of roasted hazelnuts and toasty yeast characters derived from eighteen months evolution in French oak barrels. The finely structured palate has a chalky textural complexity, as a result of an indigenous ferment and yeast lees contact, complimented by intense citrus and fig flavors." - Winemaker Notes

"Reasonably weighty Chardonnay with stone fruit/white peach/nectarine, cedar and hazelnut flavours. The wine has a perfect balance of subtle fruit sweetness and lively acidity giving a little tension and helping drive a lengthy finish. Good potential." - 95 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review
