Domaine Bouchard Chardonnay + Pinot Noir New Arrivals

Published by The Wine Emporium on 15th Feb 2022

Founded in 1731 Domaine Bouchard is an historic and very important player in the Burgundy wine scene, particularly in the Cotes de Beaune where they have magnificent holdings in many of the best vineyard sites. Today we offer what we believe to be the Domaine’s best wines including the famous Premier Cru Beaune Greves “Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus”. Their suite of Volnay 1er Cru’s Clos de Chenes, Taillepieds and Caillerets are outstanding vineyards representing very fine value for money, and their powerful, muscular, Grand Cru Corton Rouge is definitely worth your interest with its awesome track record of repaying cellaring. We conclude the offer with two of the greatest Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy - the Chardonnay grown in Chevalier Montrachet makes a powerful and regal wine of unique class and aging capability, and for Pinot Noir enthusiasts, Chambertin Clos de Beze (first cleared for viticulture around 630AD) thrills for its impeccable balance, startling complexity and effortless length of flavour.

- CHARDONNAY –

2019 Meursault 'Les Clous' - $112 per bottle ; $130 RRP

"A whiff of mineral reduction is present on the cool aromas of green apple, white flowers and a hint of wood. There is more evident minerality to the more energetic if less seductively textured flavors that terminate in a moderately firm, clean and dry finale. This will need to develop more depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range." - 89-91 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Notes of pear, fresh bread, lemon oil, vanilla pod and white flowers introduce the 2019 Meursault Les Clous, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive wine that's racy and mineral. This higher-altitude hillside site has performed well." - 89-91 points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2018 Chevalier Montrachet - $785 per bottle ; $895 RRP

"The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has an impressive bouquet of mineral-rich citrus fruit, smoke, honeysuckle and jasmine aromas, complex and alluring. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, with plenty of tangerine and grapefruit notes, but it is the mineralité and tension that really elevate this Grand Cru. For once, this might outperform the La Cabotte." - (94-96) Points, Neal Martin, Vinous

- PINOT NOIR –

2019 Monthelie 'Les Duresses' 1er Cru - $85 per bottle ; $95 RRP

"A much earthier and more sauvage-suffused nose speaks of poached plum, dark raspberry and a hint of forest floor. There is both excellent energy and details to the nicely mineral-driven medium weight flavors that conclude in a grippy but not tough finish that offers fine depth and persistence." - 89-92 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 2019 Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses opens in the glass with scents of peonies, wild berries, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor. Medium-bodied, lively and concentrated, it's deep and velvety, with lively acids and an unusually suave, elegant texture for young Monthélie. From a late-ripening site, its racier profile distinguishes it from the more gourmand Monthélie Champs Fulliot." - 90-92+ points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2019 Volnay 'Clos des Chenes' 1er Cru - $158 per bottle ; $180 RRP

"Soft but not imperceptible wood frames the aromas of baked plum and abundant wisps of both spice and floral nuances. The suave, round and enveloping middle weight plus flavors possess plenty of minerality and overt power and muscle that really comes up on the sappy and palate coating finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. As is typically the case with Clos des Chênes, this is very compact at present and is going to need 12+ years to arrive at its peak, perhaps even a few years longer." - 91-94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The finest example of this climat that I've tasted from Bouchard, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes offers up notes of peonies, wild berries and plums, complemented by hints of raw coca and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and lively, with a long, mineral finish." - 91-93+ points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2019 Volnay 'Taillepieds' 1er Cru - $158 per bottle ; $180 RRP

"A notably ripe nose has a mildly roasted character to it yet there is still good freshness to the poached plum, cassis and softly spicy aromas. There is equally good verve to the succulent but punchy and delicious flavors that are decidedly compact and tightly wound today on the impressively long and austere finish. This is very Taillepieds in the sense that it's borderline strict, yet the underlying components are present for this to be superb one day." - 91-94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"From Bouchard's 45 ares of domaine holdings, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds wafts from the glass with notes of cassis, plums, raw cocoa, woodsmoke and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly muscular and concentrated, it's structured around supple, powdery tannins and lively acids. This is very promising." - 91-93+ points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2019 Volnay 'Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot' 1er Cru - $182 per bottle ; $210 RRP

"There is a suggestion of herbal tea on the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and dark raspberry along with a hint of violet. There is a wonderful texture to the classy and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract before culminating in a compact, serious and built-to-age finish. The underlying material, and this wine's consistently outstanding track record, bodes well for the future. One to strongly consider." - 92-95 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru is a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, quite floral in style, well defined and showing more joie-de-vivre than the Chevrets. The medium-bodied palate is silky-smooth with supple tannins and flecks of dark chocolate toward the finish. Moderate depth and persistence." - 90-92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

2019 Beaune 'Greves - Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus' 1er Cru - $270 per bottle ; $310 RRP OR $610 per MAGNUM; $695 RRP

"The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus unwinds in the glass with notes of plums, cassis, loamy soil, black truffle, spices and incense. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with bright acids, ultra-refined tannins and a long, penetrating finish. This is the latest in a series of superb renditions of this cuvée, and it may be the finest of them all." - 92-94+ points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has by far the best aromatics of Bouchard’s somewhat awkward Beaune Premier Crus, delivering bright red berry fruit, crushed stone and final delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, and quite peppery on the entry, but shows more freshness and terroir expression compared to Les Tuerons or the Clos de la Mousse. Excellent." - 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

2019 Le Corton Grand Cru - $315 per bottle ; $360 RRP

"An overtly floral nose reflects notes of rose petal, lavender, acacia and violet along with nuances of red and black fruit, earth and a whiff of forest floor. There is excellent intensity, size, weight and power to the attractively textured big-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the caressing but punchy finale. This beautifully balanced effort is in the classic mold of this wine as it's very clearly built for the long haul." - 93-95 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Bouchard's 2019 Le Corton Grand Cru is extremely promising, and I ordered several magnums directly after I tasted it. Bursting with aromas of peonies, rose petals, blood orange and wild berries, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, its pungently perfumed core of fruit built around lively acids and fine, elegantly chalky tannins. This is well worth a special effort to seek out." - 93-95 points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

2019 Chambertin 'Clos de Beze' Grand Cru - $1,040 per bottle ; $1,195 RRP

"Here too there is just enough wood present to remark upon mingling with the equally spicy nose that features notes of plum, various dark berries, exotic tea and hints of game. The sleek, cool and restrained larger-scaled flavors are finer still while flashing no lack of power and drive that really builds toward the intensely saline-suffused finish. This is very classy juice that should age effortlessly for the next two decades." - 93-95 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 2019 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is destined to be much less controversial than its 2018 predecessor, as Bouchard was able to determine the date of harvest this year. Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, woodsmoke, dried flowers, licorice and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, with real concentration and a long, precise finish." - 93-95 points, William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
