First-Class Shiraz from Around Australia - on Special & Tasting

Published by The Wine Emporium on 26th Jun 2025

Lots of wine to be poured this weekend, with both our Friday and Saturday tastings flexing some very revered names!

For tomorrow (Friday 27th), we shine a light on the terrific output from Dog Point - an exceptional Marlborough estate who continually impress us (and their legions of fans) with winemaking of ample texture and forward fruit expression. Their two Sauvignon Blancs (current 2024 vintage + the 2011 Section 94, picked from old vines and aged in old oak for 18 months), as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir pairings from both 2022 and 2014 will be pouring between 4:30 and 6:30pm by the winery's global ambassador Jak Nash - we hope you can make it in and join him!

Saturday (28th) will then bring a whole row of some of Australia's most elite Shiraz producers to the table - eleven wines of Barossa, McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Heathcote, Margaret River and Great Western charm, making for one of our biggest (in both number and flavour) weekend lineups ever! These are names many Aussie drinkers will know and adore, with an entry-level juicy creation from S.C. Pannell, the awesome Syrah No. 2 from Place of Changing Winds, a marriage with the Touriga grape from Yarra Yering, the lush Blue Eyed Boy from Mollydooker, the complex old-vine reserve statement from Deep Woods, the structural Bin 0 from Bests, and Rhône-esque Syrah from Bekkers. It doesn't end there, as we'll then show off all four of the new releases from Standish! It's a lineup, by design, that encompasses and embraces what makes Australia such a world-class contributor of this grape, and why.

We hope to catch you at either one of these exciting showings!

Elite Australian Shiraz -

Specials & Tasting

Saturday 28th June (12 to 2pm)

S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz 2022 -
$25 on special this week; $28 RRP

"I love this wine and I love drinking it. It’s been stripped back from the artifice of winemaking to express the purity and breadth of McLaren Vale Shiraz. A deep well of dark flavours: Iodine, umami, soy, tar, Chambord liqueur, and boysenberry swirl followed by terracotta and sandalwood. The fruit sits happily inside the earth and forest flavours. Slippery and slurpy, glides along the palate offering a warm embrace along the way. A bay leaf crunch accentuates the tannins making way for a fruity finish." - Steve Pannell, Winemaker

Place of Changing Winds Syrah No. 2 2022 -
$35 on special this week; $40 RRP

"The 2022 Syrah No 2 is sumptuous and chewy, with a ferruginous drift of tannin across the palate. The fruit strays from mulberry to chinotto, sarsaparilla, welding metal to matcha, pastrami to sweet roasted beetroots. It is at once earthy and bloody, feral and fine, composed and neat. It's a beautiful wine, and I'm attracted to the chiaroscuro of elements; it feels primal and real." - 93 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Yarra Yering New Territories Shiraz Touriga 2021 -
$54 on special this week; $60 RRP

// 60% Shiraz, 20% Touriga Naçional and 20% Tinta Cao

"Vibrant ruby to purple tints, fragrant with blueberry, violets and North African spices lifting from the glass. Medium bodied with fresh blue fruits and spices caressing the palate. There's a subtlety and glide to this wine that is intriguing and appealing. Tannins are fine and supple, sitting in the background, but they do carry it very long and work to dry the end well. A seamless glass of red" - 95 Points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review

Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz 2022 -
$58 on special this week; $65 RRP

"The 2022 Blue Eyed Boy is impressively deep in colour, displaying vibrant dark purple hues. Its aromatic profile is both intricate and inviting, with scents of blueberry, fresh plum, and subtle hints of mocha cream bursting from the glass. This wine is a balance of strength and finesse, delivering layers of lush, fresh berries and a touch of aniseed spice, culminating in a final note of creamy chocolate. With generous and dynamic layers, the wine allows the gentle tannins to craft a smooth and enduring finish." - Winemaker Notes

Deep Woods Reserve Shiraz 2020 -
$58 on special this week; $65 RRP

"It’s grown on vines that were planted in 1972, which is remarkable in Margaret River terms. It’s a cracking red wine. Just fantastic. It’s strong, bold, firm and complex. Tannin, lots of tannin, muscular with it. Cherries into plum into straight-out kirsch into peppercorn, woodsmoke and cedar. It’s fractionally reductive, to positive effect. It will live and develop over many a yonk. This is a wine that goes for gold." - 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Bests Bin 0 Shiraz 2021 -
$75 on special this week; $85 RRP

"Dark, deep red and inky in the glass. Heady aromas of blue fruits, satsuma plum, Asian spice, cola, dried herbs, licorice and white pepper. Fleshy, mouth-filling and layered in flavour. Blueberry, plum, sarsaparilla, clove and a bunchy, earthy edge are all at play. There’s a lovely softness and suppleness to the palate and the tannins and acidity deliver shape and cut" - 95 Points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review

Bekkers McLaren Vale Syrah 2020 -
$110 on special this week; $125 RRP

"Carnal spice, pepper grind, salami and blue to darker fruits are strung across bow of saline tannic tension, rolled into a firm gristly knot. Superlative grape tannins, mind you, extracted with a confident aplomb. The oak, a mere echo. This glimpses the finest crus of the northern Rhône through the lens of the Vale. Exciting. Exceptional. Rewarding." - 96 Points, Ned Goodwin MW, Halliday Wine Companion

"The 2020 Syrah is elegant and spicy—the whole-bunch component lends a spice and a structure that is most attractive. The wine is concentrated and silken, with a flow and ebb in the mouth that speaks volumes to the pedigree of fruit resource and clever handling in the winery. In my opinion, the best McLaren Vale Shirazes/Syrahs display a balance of sweet fruit and meat; it's a challenge to foster both parts of the grape in the bottle, but when it's done, it is a marvel. As this is." - 96 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

'The Standish' Shiraz 2023 -
$148 on special this week; $165 RRP

"The 2023 The Standish Shiraz is the most "Barossan" of all the Standish cuvées. It exudes earthy brick dust tannins and layers sumac and exotic spices with roasted game and sweet marrow. There are notes of black cherry, dried rose petals, sandalwood, hung deli meat and licorice, all of it strapped to rails of grounded tannin. It's chewy, substantial and of the earth, in its way. The fruit is sourced from the Laycock family vineyard in Greenock, as always, and it expresses the red clay and loam soils there in its splay of tannic fortitude and density. This is very impressive. It is fresh yet meaty/rocky—both attractive qualities in Shiraz/Syrah." - 97 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

'Lamella' Shiraz 2023 -
$148 on special this week; $165 RRP

"2023 was a wet, cool season, so much so that the fruit for this cuvée was picked in May. Still, aromatically, the 2023 Lamella Shiraz leads with sumac and orange peel, fresh raspberry, black cherry, licorice, petrichor, wet asphalt and river stones. Sandalwood and rose petals follow through the finish. This is velvety and grainy, supple and pliable. The tannins are dry and silky, and they perfectly balance the intensity of sweet/spicy fruit in the mouth. This wine is a clear example of why you must back a producer over a vintage, because a good producer will triumph no matter the conditions." - 98+ Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

'The Relic' Shiraz Viognier 2023 -
$148 on special this week; $165 RRP

"The 2023 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier is texturally velvety and smooth; that may sound like a base observation to make, and perhaps it is, but the experience is overwhelmingly silky/ethereal this year. Apricot blossoms, sweet roasted bone marrow, hung deli meat, crushed rocks, licorice, anise and raspberry mingle in the glass, while the palate gives us these characters tenfold, bolstered and grounded by savory tannins. What more is there to say about this, other than that it is sensational? I find this to be an incredibly consistent wine year after year, with my scores rarely deviating too much from "excellent." This is among the very best Shiraz Viognier's in this country; it's a treasure." - 98 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

'Schubert Theorem' Shiraz 2023 -
$148 on special this week; $165 RRP

"The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish. The use of concrete egg in the fermentation/maturation stages lends the wine a sense of purity and finesse. It supports a core of crystalline fruit that is wrapped in earthy, grainy tannin and woven together with threads of saline acidity. It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision. Standish performs somewhat like a Burgundian producer—he works with one grape (I suppose two, if you count the small inclusion of Viognier in the Relic) to express different vineyard sites, soil types and elevations. There's no "declassified" fruit in these wines, no flow-on opportunities to other cuvées, just "make or break" viticulture and winemaking. The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking. This 2023 Schubert, despite the cool and wet conditions, is a testament to Standish's clarity of vision." - 98 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
