Focus on Corsica

Published by The Wine Emporium on 16th Aug 2021

For many years, while certainly maintaining their own level of respect, wines from Corsica have perhaps often been viewed by critics and aficionados as inferior to those emerging from France and Italy. We are now here to hopefully end any thoughts of such nature - our team were completely blown away by the beauty and style of all these drops upon our tasting last week! Aptly described by one of our staff as 'each tasting like a beautiful warm afternoon in the French countryside', the whites here have deft balance, crisp acidity, and finesse, whereas the reds impressed with deep flavours, length, and subtle sophistication. Forget all preconceptions - these wines match up with anything we've tried at these price points from any other European region, and they're on special now in our store!

DOMAINE VICO

2020 Domaine Vico Vermentino - $39 per bottle ; RRP $45

"Super complex and textured, this 100% organic Corsican Vermentino has it all! Pink grapefruit, lime and garrigue all mingle with hints of white and green almonds. The palate is soft, with excellent fruit weight, and balanced by zippy, thymey freshness. This wine reminded us of long afternoons by the sea, freshly grilled squid and a squeeze of lemon. Simply delicious." - The Wine Emporium

2020 Domaine Vico Rosé - $32 per bottle ; RRP $36

"This intriguing little blend of 100% organic Nielluciu and Sciacarellu is another excellent offering from Domaine Vico. Aromatics of fresh peach, garrigue and plenty of red berries playfully wafts from the glass. The palate is supple, soft, followed by a gorgeous acid line and elegant finish. Perfect for a lazy afternoon lounging by the pool or with pre dinner antipasti, this rosé is super more-ish and sure to please." - The Wine Emporium

DOMAINE GIUDICELLI

2020 Domaine Giudicelli Corail Blanc - $130 per bottle ; RRP $145

"What a spectacular wine! A deft blend of Muscat and Vermentino gives this wine fantastic aromatics and phenomenal texture and acidity. This utterly unique wine enchants with its delicate florals, spicy garrigue and delightfully long finish. We can't recommend this enough!" - The Wine Emporium

2017 Domaine Giudicelli Patrimonio Rouge - $138 per bottle ; RRP $159

"Another exceptional wine from Muriel Giudicelli! The nose is intense, with aromas of strawberry jam, raspberry coulis, hints of peony and a subtle spice. On the palate, there is a supple, delicate and extremely tasty juiciness that is balanced by mouth-watering tannins and perfect acidity. This is truly a wine to behold and will charm Burgundy and Bordeaux drinkers alike." - The Wine Emporium

DOMAINE SANT’ARMETTU

2019 Domaine Sant Armettu Myrtus Vermentino - $113 per bottle ; RRP $129

"Another love at first sip wine for us! This 100% Vermentino is VERY imposing - ripe green apple, citrus, white flowers and an elegant texture rarely seen outside the more 'mainstream' regions. Do yourself a favour and get your hands on one of these asap - you will be extremely grateful you did!" - The Wine Emporium

2019 Domaine Sant Armettu Myrtus Sciacarello Rouge - $113 per bottle ; RRP $129

"This weird and wonderful blend of native Corsican varietals is such an enticing wine - plenty of spices, garrigue and dark fruit underlines delicate florals. The palate is softly elegant, balanced, with an extra length that begs to be revisited. This is dangerously good." - The Wine Emporium

CLOS CANERECCIA

2016 Clos Canereccia Nielluccio Rouge - $112 per bottle ; RRP $125

"A close cousin of Sangiovese, Nielluccio thrives in Corsica and this particular wine is a great example of what that varietal can achieve when in the hands of a master! Robust and tannic, there is still plenty of juicy dark fruits and freshness for it not to be unidimensional. This reminded us of if a Brunello and a Claret had a delicious, drinkable baby..." - The Wine Emporium
