A prestigious Champagne name greets the Friday spotlight for a bubbly kick-off to the weekend, before exploring a perennial Yarra Valley favourite when Saturday rolls around!
Between 4-7pm tomorrow (Friday 25th), or until bottles run dry, the spotlight will be on Champagne Henriot, with corks popped on five distinct choices - Brut Souverain NV, Souverain Blanc de Blancs NV, Rosé NV, L'inattendue Grand Cru 2018, and their very special Cuvée Hemera from the 2013 vintage! Aromatically generous, granting a beautiful sense of their place in the village of Reims, this has been estate of passion and purpose since the early 19th-century, and we can say without hesitation that their current team (led by cellarmaster Alice Tétienne) is producing the most characterful wines we've seen since our first days of stocking them. Stop on by tomorrow, and end the week off on a high!
Giant Steps will then be waiting in the wings for Saturday's (26th) tasting, presenting a handful of the brand new single vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir releases, as well as vibrant entry labels like the Rosé and Light Dry Red (both brightened by a blend of Pinot and Syrah). Vineyards like the Applejack, Bastard Hill, Primavera and Sexton have become some of the Yarra Valley's most celebrated sites, particularly these past five years, where both critics and collectors agree the individual aromatic identities have been further defined and refined, all graced with their own microclimates and altitudes, speckled by unique soils and slope aspects. Our personal picks this year? The Bastard Hill Chardonnay is effortlessly tasty and lengthy - the best we've seen from that particular site - and the Primavera Pinot oozes with memorable elegance. These are always as cheerful as they are cellarable, and we're excited to hear the thoughts among all of you!

It's pure and precise on the palate, with a saline acid line giving the wine structure and length. "A deep, bright plummy red. The perfume when you put your nose in the glass is off the chain! Aromas of wild strawberry, black raspberry, peony, bergamot and Chinese five-spice. Multi-faceted and layered on the medium-bodied palate, with the tannins perfectly interwoven with the fruit. It's incredibly long and will reward cellaring over the next decade or more. "The Applejack Vineyard at Gladysdale in the Yarra Valley is on an east facing slope. There’s a 100 metre drop from the top of the vineyard to the bottom. There’s also significant clonal diversity in this vineyard. It was planted in 1997 in caramel-clay soils. Stunning pinot noir. Exceptionally fragrant, dramatically well structured and then just so impressively persistent. It tastes of forest berries and pure red cherry, crushed dry and fresh flowers, an assortment of teas and twiggy herb notes, though it’s that push of fruit that really beguiles.
