Henschke - The 2022 Vintage Releases on Special & Tasting!

Henschke - The 2022 Vintage Releases on Special & Tasting!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 7th May 2026

In the top echelon of Australian wine royalty, Henschke are one of the jewels in the crown. Since their establishment in the early 1860's by Johann Christian Henschke, planting a small vineyard in the cool of the Eden Valley and making his first sale within only a few years, they're a family that have remained resolute in their desire for total seamless integration between vineyard and winery. Even now, well into their fifth-generation with the great partnership between Stephen and Prue entering an incredible 47th year, the purity and hidden intricacies of their famous range speak to wine lovers of all allegiances.

To celebrate the global release of their latest single vineyard range from the 2022 season - a relatively cool late-ripening year that has tipped the wines toward bright acidity and fine perfume - we will have the full range on pour come this Saturday (9th), accompanied by several of their estate labels like the Keyneton Euphonium blend, Marble Angel Cabernet, Tappa Pass Shiraz and the always joyous Peggy's Hill Riesling. Four of the big names will be in fine voice, with the Wheelwright, Cyril Henschke, Mount Edelstone, and of course, the Hill of Grace (which will be available to try for a small tasting fee).

We hope you're able to make it along and dip your palate into these pieces of winemaking brilliance - if you can't quite manage to join in, all bottles are now here and available via the links below, with limited amounts of each of the single vineyards available!

Peggy's Hill Riesling 2025 -
$23 on special this week ($26 RRP)

"Pale in the glass with just a youthful flash of green and aromas of freshly squeezed lime, Bickford's lime cordial and hints of Christmas lilies, crushed stone, green apple, citrus blossom, lemongrass and makrut lime. Sleek in its travel with a crystalline mineral driveline; all tension and detail as it shoots across the palate. Velocity and precision writ large. Such great, refreshing drinking, with a slatey, dry finish." - 94 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Keyneton Euphonium Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot 2023 -
$55 on special this week ($62 RRP)

"This release is a monty for the cellar. It’s so fluid, so charming, so inherently complex and ultimately so well sustained. Its bay leaf notes are threaded seamlessly through blackcurrant and boysenberry; its grass and tobacco-like notes are at one with integrated cedarwood oak. There’s a juicy, leafy levity to this wine but also a dark seriousness. It’s a Claret-style in the best sense of the words." - 94 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Marble Angel Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 -
$70 on special this week ($79 RRP)

"Very good colour with a rim of purple, the bouquet reserved and showing cold-meat, black-olive, pencil-shavings and smoky characters, the palate full bodied and dense with fleshy texture and tightly packed tannins. Good concentration, depth and structure. Long finish. A serious cabernet. It's a little subdued at this moment, but 'came up' with airing in the glass and made a super-delicious drink. Lovely now, and patience will be rewarded." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Tappa Pass Shiraz 2022 -
$110 on special this week ($125 RRP)

"It is, year after year, always a favourite among some exceptional wines. 100% Shiraz from 70-year-old vines, 68% Eden Valley and 32% Barossa. Maturation was for twenty months in French oak hogsheads, 10% new. From a top vintage, this will surely rank among the very best Tappa Pass that the Henschkes have released – and that is saying something! A vibrant maroon hue, the nose suggests a complete wine, utterly harmonious. There is focus, a seductive and seamless structure, an alluring and beguiling texture, impeccable balance and immense length. At the conclusion, there are silky tannins, though they seem to almost disappear on contact. Notes of cassis emerge on the palate. A wine with real persistence, this has twenty years ahead of it, if needed. Stunning." - 97 Points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

'The Wheelwright' Shiraz 2022 -
Available for $170
(Limited availability)

"The 2022 The Wheelwright Single Vineyard Shiraz is highly perfumed with purple flowers and lifted spice. This is loaded with pomegranate, raspberry, red licorice, pink peppercorn (in that attractive citrussy way that pink peppercorns can bring) and green olive tapenade. This is structural and yet juicy, savory (tannins) but sweet (fruit) and incredibly persistent and lingering. This offers immense pleasure now, but it will, like all the Henschke wines, evolve positively in the cellar for decades to come. The 2022 vintage brings such delicacy and freshness to this wine. I love it." - 96 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"Heady, ‘composed’, settled, integrated aromas soar out of the glass. Sweet palate entry with a note of dried grasses. There’s a little leather, too. This seems like a wine you could enjoy already. It leaves a wonderfully soothing trace in the throat, and lasts for several minutes! There is real freshness and delicacy here." - 18/20 Points, Jancis Robinson MW

'Cyril Henschke' Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 -
Available for $215

(Limited availability)

"Lifted blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of olive tapenade, cedar, crushed herbs, bay leaf, violets and crushed rocks. Harmonious and silky in its travel with a core of ripe fruit layered with spice and herbs, fine, sandy tannins and a finish that draws out beautifully. No problem tucking this away in the cellar for an extended period." - 96 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

"The 2022 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon leads with spicy red fruit, dusty baking spices and layers of dried herbs, akin to bay leaf and oregano. The tannins here are profuse yet very fine. It feels leafy and earthy, medium-bodied and fresh. I appreciate the varietal definition and delicacy here. The cooler vintage that was 2022 has birthed a tranche of wines of great delicacy and “fluffiness”/freshness. They are wonderful wines—I like the vintage so much." - 95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

'Mount Edelstone' Shiraz 2022 -
Available for $315

(Limited availability)

"Fresh and bright young-wine aromas with notes of of blackberry underlying the fresh and dried herbs, smoked meats, pepper and mixed spices. Great depth of flavour and concentration but also supreme elegance and harmony. The balance is so impressive in such a young Edelstone. There are lashings of tannins but they are lovely supple, fine-grained tannins, in perfect harmony with the wine. An exceptional vintage indeed." - 98 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"It’s fragrant and fresh and seems much less obviously tannic and concentrated than previous vintages. Like the 2021 it is delightfully approachable already. There’s a note of black pepper, a bit of liquorice too. …I would happily drink it already. This is really quite subtle!" - 18+/20 Points, Jancis Robinson MW

'Hill of Grace' Shiraz 2022 -
Available for $1,100

- Available to try on the day for a tasting fee -

"The 2022 Hill of Grace Shiraz leads with dark fruit and an abundance of exotic spice to match. The tannins are profuse here, quite distinct from the Hill of Roses tasted alongside. Star anise, cloves, cinnamon (cassia), fennel seeds and Sichuan pepper weave in and out of the blackberry, blueberry, crushed quartz/ferrous undertones. There’s a sweet rolling-tobacco character that is highly attractive and lingers through the finish. I love the 2022 vintage. It is fresh and detailed. It may forever live in the shadow of the great 2021 vintage, but not for me—I believe firmly this is a sleeper vintage and will reveal its longevity given time. The allure of it now is not in question, either." - 99 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"In 2022, Hill of Grace lives up to its name! The perfume is a joyous concerto of red fruit…the palate shows incredible restraint and composure before blackcurrant notes flood in, consuming every taste bud. This time, the tannins are far more active and combative, on account of the westerly-facing aspect of this vineyard. And while the structure is incredible, there is beguiling elegance throughout. The palate shows extraordinary waves of flavour, and yet despite the depth of flavour, coolness and freshness can be found in every molecule of fruit. Many will compare it to the 2021, but this is not apples-to-apples. The weather changes everything! Instead, one must keep these two vintages standing side by side, so one can appreciate two sides of one coin and the elemental grace and unpredictability of this ancient plot of vines." - 19.5+/20 Points, Matthew Jukes

"This is a wine built to last! Delicate within the idiom of a South Australian Shiraz and beautifully balanced for future consumption. In this wine it’s not too difficult to discern the tannins but they are very ripe and very much in the background of the historic fruit. This is recognisable South Australian Shiraz but should be put away for quite a while!" -18++/20 Points, Jancis Robinson MW

'Hill of Grace' 2022 1500ml MAGNUM - Available for $2,899

'Hill of Roses' Shiraz 2022  -
Available for $525
(Very limited availability)

"The 2022 Hill of Roses Shiraz is eminently red-fruited, and this really aligns with my previous perceptions of this wine…each year the vines grow more, and the wine becomes darker, more powerful and more intense. However, it still retains its red-fruited heart throughout all the versions of climate and vintage. This is lighter, fresher and fluffier than the Hill of Grace Shiraz, and the tannins are “easier” somehow." - 98 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“It is dark, structured and imposing, but quiet, introverted and clearly made from powerful ingredients. At present, anise, cardamom, chypre and spices meld together to make a heady perfume that enrobes a refined and imposing core of black fruit. But this is not a heavy wine! It is a benchmark 2022, with sophistication and breeding, and you will have to wait at least a decade for it to start to blossom." - 19+/20 Points, Matthew Jukes

"Warm, fresh nose with – surely? – some floral element(!) as well a certain wet-stone element. …The tannins are almost imperceptible. And, like all these Henschke single-vineyard 2022s, it just goes on and on with a little salinity on the end. I could happily drink this tonight. Very well done!" - 18/20 Points, Jancis Robinson MW
