Rare is the occasion where Burgundy greets the tasting table for two weeks running, but the recent days have seen the arrival of so much quality, the decision was never in doubt!
As mentioned with last week's lineup, the 2023 Burgundy vintage is looking an entirely promising one right off the bat, with early examples bursting with dense flavour profiles and admirable complexity. Similar to last week, where we showed mulitple houses and some of their key labels, this week we move onto the great names of Domaine Faiveley, William Fevre, and Lignier-Michelot - all on tasting come Saturday (25th) between 12 to 2pm!
Given the high level of vineyard management, and total precision brought to bear in the winery (indeed one of the finest larger domaine and négociant operations in the entire region), it's no surprise the efforts from Faiveley are looking outstanding. All four on special below (two whites and two reds) show fine poise and balance, though a special mention must be granted to the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes; comfortably one of the best young village reds we've ever come across! Its superb value is something we just don't see anymore from Burgundy. Lignier-Michelot also stuns with three of their reds on show - always an estate who chase a more fleshy, sensual style of Pinot, with aromatics that look powerful at first, but slowly descend on the palate into an awesome pool of appealing minerality and potpourri spice. Look to the Coteaux Bourguignons for some exceptional early drinking at the entry-point value, while both the Chambolle and Morey-St-Denis will flesh out brilliantly in only a few short years. As something of a more refreshing counter-point, William Fevre will feature with a back-vintage of their 2017 Chablis 1er Cru (fruit from a selection of their crus), looking in a great place with some more developed fruit and floral power, plus some sleek mineral reduction.
We hope you're able to join us! For an extended range of both Faiveley and Lignier-Michelot's 2023 releases (all down on special for the next week), click the links down below the lineup to access the full lists!

DOMAINE FAIVELEY
Rully 'Les Villeranges' Blanc 2022 -
$70 on special this week; $79 RRP
"The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The musts are extracted using a pneumatic press before being settled. The alcoholic fermentation lasts 4 weeks and takes place for a proportion of the musts (50%) in French oak barrels, 10% of which are new oak. The ageing period lasts 16 months with regular stirring whilst the rest of the blend is aged in vats. This allows the wine to develop delicate woody notes whilst conserving its freshness and distinctive character. Clear, light yellow colour and a fresh nose characterised by flinty, mineral notes. The palate is smooth, round and very distinctive with a delicate touch of acidity that lingers on the fresh finish." - Winemaker Notes
Meursault 'Blagny' 1er Cru Blanc 2023 -
$255 on special this week; $290 RRP
"Meursault is the capital of fine white wines in Burgundy. This Premier Cru, located in the hamlet of Blagny, offers an exceptional terroir where Chardonnay expresses itself beautifully. The wine has a dazzling pale yellow color. The nose, both expressive and complex, reveals delicate floral aromas with subtle woody notes. The attack is crisp, leading to a wine that is broad and harmonious on the palate. Its liveliness provides a beautiful length and remarkable aromatic persistence." - Winemaker Notes
Mercurey 'Clos des Myglands' 1er Cru Rouge 2023 -
$96 on special this week; $109 RRP
"Powerful, clean and well balanced wines arise from the ideally exposed vines of this Monopole. Covering 6 ha, the clayey-limestone soil, rich in iron and clay with few pebbles, rests on deep ground. This premier Cru, the furthest north-east of Mercurey, offers a slightly rustic, raw style that is both silky and warm. Distinctive bouquet characterised by aromas of black and red fruits, intensified by woody and smoky notes. The wine reveals delicious mouthfilling backed by beautiful fullness and velvety tannins." - Winemaker Notes
"A robust and refreshing purple colour. A little burnt rubber reduction straight after bottling. Plenty of fruit here on the palate, raspberry seedless, plenty of energy, and a very good fruit acid balance." - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2023 -
$145 on special this week; $165 RRP
// One of the best young village reds we've ever tasted!
Huge volume and intensity at a incredible price.
"Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (20-30% new oak) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in our cellars at consistent, natural hygrometry and temperature. The wines are aged in vats for 2 months at the end of the ageing process. Our old vines are over 35 years old and produce an exceptionally intense and aromatic wine that reflects the unique character of its terroir. With its deep, clear ruby red hue, it reveals notes of black fruits and excellent strength and concentration. As with all Gevrey-Chambertin, it requires a few years of patience before reaching its full potential." - Winemaker Notes
DOMAINE WILLIAM FEVRE
Chablis 1er Cru 2017 -
$86 on special this week; $98 RRP
"Hmm, more vibrant depth, a proper minerality here. Starts with a little softness then takes hold of you – there’s grip, there’s juicy flavour there’s energy – ooh great!" - Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
"A slightly fresher nose speaks of mineral reduction, apple and soft floral scents. There is a lovely sense of energy to the attractively textured, rich and delicious middle weight flavors that possess much better depth and persistence. One to consider." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
DOMAINE VIRGILE LIGNIER-MICHELOT
Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge 2023 -
$79 on special this week; $88 RRP
"A bright, fresh and very pinot-like nose combines notes of both red and dark fruit with soft earth elements. There is good volume and a lovely texture to the middle weight flavors that conclude in a bitter pit fruit and balanced finish. This is very good for what it is and a wine that should drink well basically up on release." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
"The 2023 Côteaux Bourguignon uses around 40% whole cluster for the first time. This feels just a little overripe on the nose compared to others that I tasted. The palate is very sweet, candied and Gamay-like despite being 100% Pinot Noir. This is early-drinking." - Neal Martin, Vinous
Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2023 -
$210 on special this week; $240 RRP
"Liqueur-like aromas of spicy red berries display a top note of violet. The super-sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors exude an appealing minerality on the balanced, dusty and youthfully austere finale. This needs to develop more depth but that should reasonably occur if given a chance." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from two lieux-dits on clay and more limestone soils. This is quite open and generous on the lightly extracted and finely delineated nose with red berries, touches of incense and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied and quite elegant in style with fine tannins and a fleshy, smooth, lightly spiced finish. It's delightful." - Neal Martin, Vinous
Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 2023 -
$210 on special this week; $240 RRP
"Here too the nose of red and dark cherry is both fresh and bright with a broader range of floral elements. Once again the medium weight flavors possess a beguiling texture that contrasts moderately with the firm, youthfully austere and firm finale. This solidly persistent effort could also use better depth so at least a few years of cellaring are recommended." - Allen Meadows, Burghound
"Beautifully scented, as Morey can be. Sweet-fruited and floral. Juicy, smooth and with more fruit at the core than some in this vintage. Generous and harmonious." - Jancis Robinson MW
