New Grosset and Jasper Hill Releases on Tasting!

New Grosset and Jasper Hill Releases on Tasting!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 7th Sep 2023

Two legendary names from the Clare Valley and Heathcote will be in the tasting limelight for this Saturday's (9th Sept) tasting - the new releases from Grosset and Jasper Hill!

With the summer heat having already arrived, these complex yet prestinely crisp and refreshing whites from the great team at Grosset (with three rieslings and one fiano on show) are no doubt one of our highlights in the yearly schedule, having amassed a sizeable fanbase through the years with their prestine, organically-certified winemaking made possible by that continental Clare Valley climate. Their relatively long cool season and late harvest imbibes these four drops a certain ripe intensity that makes for gorgeous early drinking.

Then to provide the punch, there'll be three brawny yet balanced Jasper Hill reds from the picturesque lands of northern Victoria! From a well-mannered Heathcote vintage after a difficult 2020 ravaged from smoke, and 2021 with low yields, these 2022's are certainly poised and powerful, and will absolutely reward a fair few years away in the cellar, but this depth also brings a delicious rich savouriness that is great to appreciate young - we'll be popping the corks on them nice and early so that they've had time to breathe by the time the tasting kicks off (12 to 2pm)! See you all on Saturday!

Tasting Lineup - Saturday 9th of September

from 12 to 2pm

2023 Grosset Alea Riesling - $45 on offer; $50 RRP

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic

"After fourteen vintages, the ‘European’ approach adopted for this individual-site wine is more subtle. Mild seasonal conditions have resulted in a bright and expressive Alea - the aromatics are pronounced with suggestions of preserved lemon and while almost bone-dry, is complex and perfectly balanced. It has freshness, mid-palate intensity, purity and finesse, finishing at full throttle with lime juice at its core." - Winemaker Notes

"Reserved yeasty aromas and fuller/riper lemongrass fruit, the palate bears this out, with generous, ample flavour that spreads across the palate in a more open-knit style. The trace of sweetness is barely evident, just softens and fills out the finish and aftertaste." - 93 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2023 Grosset Apiana Fiano - $52 on offer; $58 RRP

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic "This is high-powered fiano with structure: Voluminous aromatics, floral notes, hints of honey, almonds; this has such an enticing bouquet. It's incredibly captivating, is tight and full of flavour in the mid-palate, then lingers, so appealing. Powerful and fresh, reflective of cool-site fiano, brief skin contact has brought this to the fore. There's a tense juiciness on the finish that leads you to the next mouthful." - Winemaker Notes

"Light green-yellow colour with dominant new-wine yeastiness on the nose, the palate rich and full, soft and round, fruity but seems near-dry although the acidity is also very soft. Straightforward and pretty: will it build more complexity as it develops." - 92 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2023 Grosset Springvale Riesling - $52 on offer; $58 RRP

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic

"After 23 years, Grosset Springvale Vineyard has ‘come of age’. This rare combination of riesling clones planted entirely on red loam-over-limestone, with slate at its base, offers bright, floral perfumes, intensity and finesse in the mid-palate, delicacy and yet power and generosity on its finish: the persistence, harmony and balance arising from extended time on lees, vine maturity and impact of site." - Winemaker Notes

"Pale colour; lifted yeasty, bakery/patisserie and nettle aromas, very frgarant and subtly perfumed. It's also delicate and refined in the mouth with a trace of tannin underlining the texture, adding strength to the line and finish. Excellent young riesling." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2023 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling - $75 on offer ; $85 RRP

// Certified Organic & Biodynamic

"This surprises with its almost riotous aromatics. Delightful floral aromas with hints of lime juice and beeswax - though it's white flowers that dominate. It's almost joyful or playful. On the palate, tight, fine and intense; a pure and unevolved thread of lime juice at its core. It has depth of flavour and intensity in its infancy with the suggestion that these will become hallmarks of the aged wine. And the aromatics!" - Winemaker Notes

"Pale straw-yellow with a slaty/straw/mineral bouquet; yeasty overtones, fragrant and intense with herbal notes on the palate as well as lime leaf and lemon-pith traces. Superfine and delicate with a long and harmonious carry." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Limited Magnums also Available!

Grosset Polish Hill 2023 Magnum - Available at $185

2022 Jasper Hill Occam's Razor Shiraz - $46 on offer; $52 RRP

"Grapes from Colbinabbin, mid-north of the Heathcote region, blended together with a smaller parcel from further south west. Harvested early to capture a great fresh feel. Delicate nose, dark crimson colour, soft tannins, forward bright fruit of rhubarb and red plum. Delicious, enjoy it now." - Winemaker Notes

"Inky and black in the glass. Super-ripe aromas of prune, stewed plum, pudding, spice, ferrous earth and dates. Big and brawny on the palate, full of plum, mulberry, mocha and spice flavours. The tannins are really dry, savoury and firm and the acidity has punch and lift. A massively proportioned wine that does display balance and poise" - 92 Points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review

2022 Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock Shiraz - $83 on offer ; $95 RRP

"It’s got everything you want from a typical Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz. Powerful yet elegant, well rounded red and black fruits, brilliant spice with soft subtle tannins that extend through the whole palate. Very well balanced as usual. Cellar or drink now, your choice." - Winemaker Notes

"A pretty and intense nose of blackcurrants, anise and violets. At first, it doesn't give away much, it's very composed and stealthy in its expression. With air, hints of iodine, pepper and bush spices arise. A bomb of flavour explodes on the palate—black olives, violets and sweet spices are framed by powdery tannins. The tannin quality is a stand-out, it's so fine yet long and sleek. This is ripe and full-bodied yet everything is perfectly jigsawed into place, nothing seems forced. In its youth, It's a touch apprehensive to reveal all, but this is a wine meant for aging." - 96 Points, Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review

2022 Jasper Hill Emily's Paddock Shiraz Cabernet Franc - $109 on offer ; $125 RRP

"A classic, perfumed, Emily’s Paddock. Complex layers of flavour; flint, spice, mint, toasty oak wrapped up in dark and brooding black and blue fruits. Soft, velvety tannins that coat your palate, great length and with fabulous longevity if you can wait, but equally delicious now." - Winemaker Notes

"Dark, inky and opaque in the glass. Deep, brooding aromas of graphite, ferrous earth, florals, smoked meats, spice and pepper. Full bodied, rich, mouth-filling and multi-faceted. Very pure and dark fruit driven with real depth, presence and purity. The tannins are firm, textured and deliver shape and savouriness and the acidity has brightness and lift. A compelling shiraz, with power and precision." - 96 Points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review
