On a quest for excellence since the moment of their establishment in 1981, Ornellaia have been among the finest, most reputed estates in all of Tuscany, Italy, and the wide world of wine for decades now, with their anticipated releases late every year being major highlights for red lovers and collectors. Once you try their creations, it becomes so easy to see why; they are masters of marrying elegance with intensity, a benefit of the region in which they are grown, Bolgheri; the only coastal appellation in Tuscany! As such, the beautiful Mediterranean climate and rich soils are perfectly harmonised in their Bordeaux-esque grape blends (which first began the 'Super Tuscan' movement).
2020 has been described by the estate director as 'classic Ornellaia', as the lockdowns that year meant full and total focus could be given to producing the finest possible blend - this vintage bringing the biggest percentage of Cabernet Franc since 2016, and a return to a slightly more balanced, typical blend for the house following the Cabernet Sauvignon dominance in 2019, and the same with Merlot in 2018.
The complex structure and endless layers of fruit are already so lovable and accessible here, but of course these are very much built to last and will reward patience through the years in such a way that only the finest reds in the world can boast. The lovely Serre Nuove is the answer to some gorgeous early drinking from the house, with its silky round palate shining in all its glory right now!

"Estate director Axel Heinz called 2020 ‘a classic Ornellaia,’ and picked the theme of ‘La Proporzione‘ (proportion) to describe its character. Fine-grained and beautifully textured, its finely integrated tannins support a concentration of black fruits lightened by red berries. Aromas of black cherry, liquorice, dark chocolate, cedar and damp earth make for a fragrant wine, accompanied by menthol and balsamic streaks which run through the wine and impart plenty of freshness. It finishes with a stony and salty element along with some chocolatey and woody hints. Tight and moreish, its ripeness of fruit combined with freshness and structure adeptly tells the story of this earlier-ripening vintage.
