2022 Gembrook Hill JKM Pinot Noir - $87 on offer this week ; $99 RRP

"Following on from the 2018 inaugural release we are pleased to offer the third vintage of the JKM Pinot Noir. Again more of a winemaker's wine. The intention for this wine is to explore both new viticultural and wine making techniques, while still capturing the essence of the vineyard. The viticultural technique is shoot selection - a refinement of shoot thinning which we have always used in the vineyard. This serves to open up the canopy, reducing disease risk and increasing sunlight into the canopy, while producing more intense fruit. The winemaking technique is the use of some whole bunch fermentation from our newest plantings of Pinot which was then matured in a new French hogshead. This made up a third of the wine while the rest comes from destemmed young vine fruit. There were two barrels of this, both matured in old french oak." - Winemaker Notes

"Medium red tinged with purple; complex and fragrant aromas of smoky charcuterie, strawberry and raspberry, with stalky/whole-bunch overtones, the palate light-medium weight and intense, texturally refined, light on its feet and delicate, with excellent balance and drinkability. An aerial style of pinot." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2022 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir (Tasmania) - Available for $105

"A very strong year for Pinot Noir at Tolpuddle. There is complexity and power, balanced by pure fruit notes and cool season spice. It shows powerful fruit, with ripe red cherry, smoked meat, and olive notes, framed by fine but firm tannins. Great length of flavour. An exciting vintage. The grapes were all hand-picked and fermented as a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, in open fermenters, with gentle pump-overs and plunging. The wine was aged in French oak for ten months, of which about one third was new. Will repay careful cellaring for up to 12 years." - Winemaker Notes

"Impressively deep, rich purple-red colour, unusual in Australian pinot noir. The bouquet is loaded with black cherry, blackberry and spice aromas, a hint of smoky oak adding charcuterie and fivespice nuances, while the palate is voluptuously full and rich, decadently flavoured, with luxurious flesh and fruit, abundant fine/soft tannins and terrific length. There are some whole-bunch nuances which are beautifully incorporated into the wide array of flavours. A totally convincing and thoroughly impressive Aussie pinot noir to compare with the best in the world." - 98 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2022 Cobaw Ridge Original Pinot Noir (Macedon) - $86 on offer this week ; $98 RRP

"As the name suggests, fruit from our original 1995 planting. Pinot Noir Clones 114, 115, MV6. Super fine and more delicate than our High Density Pinot, but still with amazing intensity." - Winemaker Notes

"Given its cool-climate location, there’s a thread of cooler flavours and attributes from alpine herbs to wild strawberries with morello and pink cherries. A strong fragrance of the landscape in eucalyptus, river mint and warm earth with charred radicchio come to the fore with juicier fruit on the medium-bodied palate. Raw silk tannins and plenty of refreshing acidity add to the pleasing texture." - 93 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion (on Cobaw's '21 vintage)

2022 Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir (Central Otago) - Available for $85

"A vivid nose of deep florals: dark roses, violets, and an undertow of ripe red fruit. The palate really shows the best of each vineyard that makes up the cuvée. A pure but powerful drive of fruit on a perfect cusp of ripeness, with complexing notes of sandalwood and spice. This is all about harmony and balance with the transparency of fruit allowing the detail to shine through. Silken tannins finish the package." - Winemaker Notes

"Deliciously fragrant and intense floral aroma that follows on to the palate where it is joined by cassis, dark cherry, black Doris plum, vanilla, savoury dried herbs and mixed spice and anise flavours. This could be the best Bannockburn pinot noir that I can recall tasting. It has an ethereal texture and a backbone of fine tannins. Absolutely delicious wine!" - 97 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

2021 Nanny Goat Basket Case Pinot Noir (Central Otago) - $96 on offer this week ; $110 RRP

"Basket-Case is a creative outlet, a chance to roll back my sleeves, get my hands dirty and connect with my wines on a much deeper level. By utilising tiny parcels of fruit and small scale ferments, I am afforded the freedom to experiment, to push the boundaries in an effort to tease out additional layers of subtlety and nuance - all in the hope of attaining the elusive notion of 'perfection'. The 2021 Basket Case is a Pandora’s Box of complex aromas – heady and perfumed with wild strawberry, potpourri, borage flower and musk. Hints of cinnamon and nutmeg spiced blue berry fruits laced with garrigue and resinous lick of conifer sap. The palate is sleek, taut and sinewy, with powder fine tannins and a bright streak of acidity that will be just as well suited to a rich lamb dish now or a few years relaxing in the cellar before opening." - Winemaker Notes

"Ripe, vibrant red with black cherry/berry, plum, spice/anise, fresh herbs and hedgerow flavours. Vibrant, high energy wine that can be appreciated now but should develop well with bottle age.itional layers of subtlety and nuance - all in the hope of attaining the elusive notion of 'perfection'.." - 92 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

2017 Prophet's Rock Retrospect Pinot Noir (Central Otago) - $199 on offer this week ; $230 RRP

"The vineyard sits on a high elevation (320 – 390m), steep glacial terrace high above the valley floor. The site features some of the oldest vineyard soils in the valley with the formation of the terrace occurring approximately 650K years ago. The soil age and dry Central Otago climate have combined to create the unusual clay and pedogenic lime soil structure. Beneath layers of clay at a depth of 50cm in this parcel sits a thick layer of chalk. The 7.5ha site was prepared and planted between 1999-2001 and the parcel of Pinot Noir for this wine is a single clone at the eastern end of the steep front face. Full organic certification (Biogro) was completed prior to the 2018 vintage." - Winemaker Notes

"A compact, savory pinot with layers of wild berries, dried porcini, pink peppercorns, ash, spiced cherries, rosemary, suede and cloves. Firm yet velvety tannins here. Muscular pinot with a firm, long and focused finish. Drink or hold." - 98 Points, JamesSuckling.com

2020 Jean Marc Bouley Pommard - $197 on offer this week ; $225 RRP

"Wafting from the glass with notes of sweet cherries, strawberries, vine smoke, raw cocoa and spices, the 2020 Pommard Village is medium to full-bodied, cool and layered, with terrific depth at the core and a lively spine of acidity that carries through the long, saline finish. As usual, the blend is dominated by the cool, northeasterly exposures of the windy lieu-dit of Valmuriens. Best to drink 2025 to 2045." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate
