Sons of Eden Releases + Weekend Tasting w/ Winemaker

Published by The Wine Emporium on 11th Jul 2024

With over 50 vintages in the Barossa between the two of them, Simon Cowham and Corey Ryan are the experienced wine wizards behind Sons of Eden; an estate spread over 30 unique vineyard sites in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, and the focus of our Saturday tasting this weekend (hosted by Simon himself!)

With a traditional tendency towards Shiraz and Riesling, each expression holds a strong sense of individuality based on the respective terroir they hail from - all of their grapes are meticulously picked by hand, and handled in their minimal intervention winery. Their Marschall Shiraz and Freya Riesling are superb pieces of value, while the Romulus is a prime example of Eden Valley elegance and grace, while its brother Remus stands as a classic Barossa beauty with well-defined layers of chocolate, spice and earth. On top of those, there's some lovingly crafted Cabernet, Grenache, and a limited 2016 release sitting in a shiny golden bottle known as 'Autumnus' that Simon will be thrilled to pour and tell you all about.

This will run from the usual 12 to 2pm (13th July), so we very much encourage you to come by, grab a glass and hear from the former Barossa Winemaker of the Year himself!

Sons of Eden Specials + Saturday 13th Tasting (12 to 2pm)

Freya Eden Valley Riesling 2023 -
$21 on special this week; $24 RRP

"Like the stern but beautiful Norse goddess this wine is named after, it is formidable: bone dry, stoic and confident. Built around an austere line of sharp citrus, it also has good mineral grip and a pleasing lick of talc at the finish. There’s a concentration of flavours without forcing any element, amplifying the attributes of a superior vintage. Effortless balance is achieved in this powerful wine." - 96 Points, David Sly, Decanter

Kennedy GSM 2022$24 on special this week; $27 RRP

"The 22nd release of this particular grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre blend (this year 45/30/25%); from vines up to 90-plus years of age across Trial Hill, Light Pass, Nuriootpa, Seppeltsfield and Vine Vale. And it’s a good ‘un! Bright, perfumed and detailed with super-pure plummy fruit, layers of spice, earth, florals, gingerbread and roasting meat goodness. Driven by a vivid line of lacy acidity and framed with powdery tannin, it seems like it is a good place and will provide great drinking over the medium term." - 94 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Pumpa Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022$23 on special this week; $26 RRP

"Deep crimson in colour, with a mixed array of dark-cherry, cedar and wild forest herb aromas. The palate is fleshy and rounded, with ripe chewy tannins, finishing with a buoyant freshness. This wine is approachable now but will continue to gain complexity as it matures." - Winemaker Notes

Marschall Shiraz 2022 - $23 on special this week; $26 RRP

"From six vineyards in six districts, with a wide range of fermentation techniques, matured in new and used French hogsheads for 14 months. A smooth, supple medium-bodied wine is the result, with plum and blackberry fruits, integrated oak and tannins. Value-plus." - 95 Points, James Halliday The Weekend Australian (Top 100 Wines of 2022)

Notus Grenache 2022$37 on special this week; $42 RRP

"Deep purple-red colour, bright and youthful; the aroma is superbly intense and ripe, spicy and dark-cherry to cherry brandy aromas, a lick of oak adds an extra dimension, while the palate is intense and bold, long and ample, with excellent depth of flavour and abundant fine, supple tannins. Brandied cherry traces. Very impressive." - 94 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Remus Eden Valley Shiraz 2021$66 on special this week; $75 RRP

"2021 was a fine year, and that fact shines through in this wine. Detailed with just the right amount of structural sinew pure sage, amaro and spice-flecked red and dark berry fruits, showing space, vitality and poise across its length. A really impressive release." - 95 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Romulus Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 - $66 on special this week; $75 RRP

"Bright red and dark plummy fruits cut with exotic spice, violet and jasmine top notes, licorice, dark chocolate and Barossa earth. Detail and line are recurring themes in the SoE wines; nothing overblown or over the top, just pure, spicy fruit, a graceful passage across the palate and a distinct regional thumbprint. It’s drinking nicely now but will improve with careful cellaring." - 95 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Autumnus Shiraz 2016 - $315 on special this week; $360 RRP
*Limited availability

"If you were to assess a wine based solely on its length of flavor, then this 2016 Autumnus Shiraz would do nothing but stun you. The rivulets of velvety, plush fruit rolls across the palate and undulate through the long, lingering finish. What a wine! Wow. As to the flavors, there’s Christmas cake spice, black cherries, aniseed and licorice, dark chocolate, raspberries, mulberries, a few damsons, blood plums, beetroot, pastrami and pink peppercorns. A symphonic display. But, for me, more than the flavor and more than the length (both formidable elements in their own rights), the texture is the real highlight. The tannins are so smooth, so shapely and so streamlined that it barely beggars belief. This is what I will remember about this wine in the future: the tannins. Awesome." - 98 Points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
