Soumah Specials + Tasting (Dmitri Lazariuc Joins Us!)

Published by The Wine Emporium on 4th Oct 2024

The wines from Soumah, with vineyards based in the picturesque Yarra Valley, are a huge favourite (and infallible go-to) of ours at The Wine Emporium. Indeed if you're ever in the Yarra we highly recommend you pop in - you'll find Soumah down a quiet country lane (Hexham Road) in the Warramate foothills of Gruyere Parish on the northern flanks of Coldstream Hills. FYI, Soumah is an abbreviation of this area on an old map, a reference for South of Maroondah Highway when a lot of this area was operated as dairy farms.

Proprietor Brett Butcher purchased the property in the late 90’s, having spent his career working in restaurants and hotels around the world. We believe his end-consumer experience is one of the factors behind his success as, at their core, every Soumah wine is absolutely delicious!

Soumah do the Yarra Valley classics of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with aplomb. This Saturday we feature their accessible and affordable d'Soumah range, and compare these to their top end Equilibrio range. Despite their passion for the international varieties, Soumah also perfectly execute a growing portfolio of 'alternative' varieties. On Saturday you'll try their excellent Savagnin, Nebbiolo and blend, and brand new sparkling aged on lees for 4 years

Pop down to the shop this Saturday (5th Oct) from 12-2pm, where we’ll be joined by Brett’s right hand man, and General Manager Dmitri Lazariuc, who has worked in the vineyards and winery at Soumah for the last decade. Dmitri is a terrific fellow, and we encourage all to come down and take a look at the wines with him!

Soumah "Crescent Moon" Methode Traditionnelle Sparkling Pinot Noir / Chardonnay 2020

$63 on special this week; $72 RRP

(Inaugural Release!)

The brand new fizz from Soumah is gorgeous. This is a driven, refreshing, elegant wine with gentle seasoning from maturation on lees for 4 years.

Soumah "Savarro" Savagnin 2024$28 on special this week; $32 RRP

(New Release!)

An ancient green-skinned, tight-bunched variety that was first recorded in the 10th century. According to Soumah, the cool climate of the Yarra Valley is perfect for the variety. This is made in a pure, fresh fashion, with maturation in steel and old oak, the latter portion on texture-nourishing lees. Again, we have a gorgeously versatile wine, with a different flavour to the standard international varieties. This is a belter!

Soumah No. 2 "Wild" Savagnin NV$73 on special this week; $83 RRP

The inception of the Wild Savagnin ‘Solero’ No.2 comes from Soumah's love of this ancient variety that was first recorded in the 10th century Northern Italy. Inspired by original winemaking techniques, the good people at Soumah hand-pick and foot-stomp small parcels of Savagnin, which were then predominantly fermented in clay with indigenous yeast on full solids — much like they may have way back when. The layering of many vintages as per the solera technique develops deep brooding flavours while still retaining freshness in the wine. A very individual wine, and a fascinating, complex and evolving drink. No sip is the same!

Soumah "d'Soumah" Chardonnay 2023$31 on special this week; $35 RRP

What we love about the Soumah wines is the thought that goes into making a wine thats fundamentally balanced and enjoyable. An earlier picked style, yet with some thoughtful wnemaking practice sees this as a fresh wine with an engaging textural component.

Soumah "Equilibrio" Chardonnay 2022$75 on special this week; $85 RRP
(New Release!)

What others would call a "Reserve" is termed what Soumah call "Equilibrio". The best performing clones, fruit and barrels are selected to fashion the finest wine of the season, with an emphasis on harmony and balance.

Soumah "d'Soumah" Pinot Noir 2023$31 on special this week; $35 RRP
(New Release!)

Two years in a row now, this wine has ended up on our shortlist for one of the top value pinot noir in Australia. Both 2022 and now 2023 are very small yielding vintages, so we have some added oomph to go with cool-vintage freshness. I love how brisk and clean this is despite the flavour intensity. Time is required to see whether '23 or '23 is ultimately the better vintage, but right now the '23 is a terrific follow up for the crowd favourite 2022.

Soumah "Equilibrio" Pinot Noir 2023$75 on special this week; $85 RRP
(New Release!)

Soumah "Hexham" Nebbiolo 2021$45 on special this week; $52 RRP
(New Release!)

If you love Nebbiolo you must try this! There is a compelling movement around Australian Nebbiolo (think the Luke Lambert Nebbiolo which is now regarded as one of Australia's most desirable reds!), where now the consumer is absolutely spoiled for choice due to the large number of high quality offerings. Rich aromatics, a palate full of expanse, yet with just enough tension and savouriness on the finish. This wine is gorgeous.

Soumah Nebbiolo/Barbera 2023$28 on special this week; $32 RRP
A classic pairing of two noble north-eastern Italian varieties combine here to create a savoury elegant red wine with soft fruit and charming length. The Nebbiolo brings excellent tannin and finesse with aromas of wild herbs and violets, while the Barbera compliments with ripe red berry fruit and velvet mouthfeel. This is a modest, versatile and food friendly red wine. And the value!
