Steve Pannell's Greatest Koomilya Release

Steve Pannell's Greatest Koomilya Release

Published by The Wine Emporium on 23rd Aug 2021

Behold the latest lovingly-crafted red from the marvelous Steve Pannell (SC Pannell Wines) to arrive in our store - and in style! The understated power and elegance of this shiraz blew our collective minds to such an extent, we decided to go ahead and buy the entirety of the Queensland allocation still available - we loved it that much. Scoring 98 points from James Halliday, the price of this beauty is almost too good to be true. Lovers of all things Aussie red should not miss out, especially since this vintage will be the winery's last at this price point, before a promotion to a single-block vineyard next year.

A NOTE ON THE VINEYARD

The Koomilya vineyard is wedged between the original Upper Tintara vineyard in McLaren Vale. It is hidden away at the dead end of Amery Road and includes 13 hectares of vineyards and over 15 hectares of native bush and scrub; with a creek line that flows through the heart of the property.

The scrub and creek line have a moderating influence on the microclimate of the property. The cool air from the 161 hectares Hardy scrub which sits above the property flows down the creek line in the evenings; keeping the nights cooler. The native bush hills to the north and west protect the vineyards from the strong and often hot winds in summer.

THE WINE

2017 Koomilya Estate Shiraz - $59 per bottle ; RRP $69

“From one small section (known as the GT block) of a prized vineyard in the Upper Tintara subregion of McLaren Vale, now in the hands of Steve Pannell. 16% whole bunch, wild ferment, 20% new oak in the maturation cycle. This is a most distinctive shiraz in the greater regional context, exuding a powerful mix of black fruits with the smells of Australian bush enveloping the fruits. The palate is dense, not with oak but with rich, savoury licorice and definite earthy, mossy, roasted root vegetable notes in there as well. And with all that, there's still a medium-bodied flow through the mouth. Which should be open in awe at the exit because of how astoundingly good this wine is!" - 98 Points, Tony Love, James Halliday's Wine Companion
