Te Mata Coleraine & More

Te Mata Coleraine & More

Published by The Wine Emporium on 23rd Mar 2022

Behold the latest anticipated release from, simply, one of the very best around - and some very high scores to go along with it!

Described as 'a national treasure' by Jancis Robinson MW, Te Mata is New Zealand’s oldest wine estate, with every step of wine making undertaken on site – from vine to glass – in the foothills of Te Mata Peak. Cabernet, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were first planted on these hills in 1892 and the first wines released in 1896. Within a decade, they were winning gold medals across the globe. While the estate has grown, Te Mata still hand harvest from the same vineyards, and age wines in the original barrel halls – the oldest in New Zealand.

The 2020 vintage was Te Mata’s driest fruit-growing season on record, giving pristine fruit with intense levels of concentration. Using the latest fine-wine technology, Te Mata was able to capture the finest qualities of their Hawke’s Bay estate with a new level of control and precision. A wine that glimmers at every facet.

2019 Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc - $37 per bottle ; $42 RRP

"This vintage of Cape Crest, Te Mata's renowned barrel-fermented SB (with a little Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris) is singing. Typical to Hawke's Bay, this is about fleshy fruit without a trace of the pungent, green veg characters found elsewhere in NZ. The bright fruit aromas are harmonized by floral, honeyed, buttery toast. The palate comes with almost bracing acidity compared with the gentleness of the nose, but it's balanced by silky textural components and depth of flavor. This SB demonstrates Te Mata's classic winemaking style along with the deep well of Hawke's Bay flavors." - 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast

2019 Elston Chardonnay - $45 per bottle ; $50 RRP

"One of the best examples of Elston that I can recall tasting. Crisp, dry chardonnay with reduced malolactic fermentation. An elegant wine with a mineral thread and grapefruit, lemon curd, hazelnut and Baguette crust flavours. 2021–2026" - 95 Points, The Real Review

2018 Awatea Cabernet Merlot - $44 per bottle ; $49 RRP

"The perfumed bouquet shows dark and purple fruit characters with warm spice, olive, cedar and floral notes. It’s splendidly concentrated and beautifully layered on the palate, delivering excellent fruit power combined with depth and complexity, finishing persistent and engaging. The wine is gorgeously framed by an abundance of powdery tannins, making it classically structured while remaining finely balanced and graceful." - 95 Points & 5*, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

2018 Bullnose Syrah - $66 per bottle ; $75 RRP

"Ras el hanout is a spice mix that means ‘head of the shop’, and maybe we have a bull in a shop here, such is the level of exotic spice and perfume pumping out of the glass. In with that, some lavender and vanilla, cherry and redcurrant, a smattering of green herb too. It’s light to medium-bodied, fine emery tannin, juicy raspberry acidity and flavour, inner-mouth perfume and spiced wood aromatic, and a dusty white pepper texture and taste on a cool long finish. Nice and ‘minerally’ too. You have to like them spicy and lithe, and if so, this’ll be close to the top of the shop for you." - 95 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2020 Coleraine Cabernet Merlot - $110 per bottle ; $125 RRP

- PRE ARRIVAL: STOCK DUE TO ARRIVE LATE MARCH -

"Fine and flawless ... Powerfully concentrated palate ... Astonishing complexity, brilliantly structured…formidable depth and undeniably spellbinding." - 100 Points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"A blend of cabernet sauvignon 57%, merlot 36% and cabernet franc 7%. A deeply-tinted, almost inky wine with layers of sumptuous fruit and savoury characters, including cassis, red rose, dark chocolate, hedgerow, anise and nutty oak. A generously proportioned, youthful red that is already surprisingly accessible but promises to age gracefully. 2022–2046" - 98 Points, The Real Review
