Te Mata Tasting // New Releases & Specials!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 23rd Feb 2023

The legendary Te Mata, New Zealand's oldest wine estate, marks one of our favourite releases on the yearly calendar. Their wines are creations of passion, heritage, and a deep understanding of both the land and their own winemaking process; something only 127 years of history can bring to an estate such as this. Just in this week is their new showcase release for 2023, featuring wines from the remarkable three year run of 2019, 2020 and 2021 - a set of vintages that the winery calls 'the greatest in Te Mata's history'.

Look below for the lineup, including the 100 POINT Coleraine from 2021 - their legendary red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

We are so pleased to have them on TASTING this Saturday (25th) from 12 to 2pm! The quality on show is too good to miss out on, so make sure to come join in - these are wines of immense depth, ripe fruits, and long palates, made by one of the best teams in the house's rich history. We hope to see you Saturday!

2021 Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc - $39 on special ; $45 RRP

"A bright and pale straw colour, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’21 immediately offers up notes of guava, lime juice, white nectarine and white peach, that all lead into a palate exploding with tropical fruit, salinity, and a fine, crystalline acidity. The perfect match for a plump fresh oyster in its half shell, the complexing notes of woodsmoke, grapefruit and juniper in Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’21 make it satisfy now yet more than capable of ageing. Moreish and complex, this a wine of immense reward." - Winemaker Notes

Light yellow hue leads into a powerful bouquet of nutty, spicy barrel-fermented aromas well meshed with ripe Sauvignon fruit aromas. The palate likewise intense and long, with great volume and concentration as well as wonderful focus. A top barrel fermented style of Savvy. At its best now until 2032." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2021 Elston Chardonnay - $50 on special ; $57 RRP

"Brilliant white gold in the glass, Elston Chardonnay ’21 has wonderfully intense aromas of golden peach, apricot, and lemon zest. Focused but flowing – this is a wine of precision, power, and poise. On the mouth-watering palate there’s oodles of ripe, white-fleshed fruit, nougat and nutmeg, integrated fine oak tannin, and just a flick of salinity. A long line of sweet citrus acidity and ripe Hawke’s Bay chardonnay fruit run through here. Resplendent in its charms, Elston Chardonnay ’21 would match with the best grilled lobster you can get. Or just sit and watch the wine unfold over several hours with a soft-ripened white cheese." - Winemaker Notes

"A complex bouquet of sneaky hints of buttered toast, roasted hazelnuts, underlying citrus fruits, lemon and grapefruit. Creamy lees and shortbread-like malo characters. Excellent intensity of flavour powered along by great acidity that really drives the wine and prevents it being heavy. Concentration and drive in spadefuls. A generous, mouth-filling Chardonnay with great amplitude and incredible length. Time will bring increased complexity." - 96 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

2019 Awatea Cabernet Merlot - $45 on special ; $52 RRP

// 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 22% Cabernet Franc

"Very bright, deep, youthful purple/red colour. The aromas are outstandingly deep and bright and youthfully fresh; violets, red and blue fruits rocketing out of the glass, oak barely visible in the background. The wine is soft-textured and medium to full-bodied, elegant and pure, seamless and long. An utterly delicious cabernet blend." - 95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

"It’s the best Awatea I can recall tasting... Blackcurrant, raspberry leaf, spice and perfume, dark chocolate and black tea. Medium-bodied, dense, firm and concentrated, a subtle herbal fragrance through red and black fruits, with an umami edge of black olive tapenade, a distinct ‘mineral’ ironstone feel to it, crisp raspberry acidity and flavour, a tight mesh of fine chalky tannin to close out a long bright finish. Wonderful." - 95 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2020 Alma Pinot Noir - $73 on special ; $83 RRP

"Gorgeously seductive and perfumed, the bouquet shows red cherry, floral, thyme and warm spice aromas with a hint of mushroom complexity. The palate offers impressive substance and seamless flow, beautifully complemented by fleshy texture and fine polished tannins. Superbly harmonious and multi-layered with a prolonged velvety finish. At its best now to 2034." - 96 Points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"Bright, delicately aromatic pinot noir with cassis, dark plum, violet, wood smoke and quite prominent spicy oak. The wine has an appealing purity and seamlessness. It delivers power with consummate subtlety. Accessible now but promises to age gracefully." - 95 Points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

2019 Bullnose Syrah - $75 on special ; $85 RRP

"Brilliant amethyst with a deep black core, Bullnose Syrah '19 glimmers with raspberry, ripe black cherry, and dried strawberry over lush velvet tannins. There are grace notes of black pepper, chocolate, liquorice, lilac, even char and baking spices, with the structure and elegance contributing to undeniable ageing potential. Ripe-fruited. Taut. Silky. Bullnose Syrah '19 is utter class. A black velvet beauty." - Winemaker Notes

"The wine exhibits a great degree of elegance as well as opulence and gutsy substance. The sweetly fragrant bouquet shows Black Doris plum, violet, cedar and game characters with a touch of pepper spice. It’s weighty and sumptuous on the palate displaying awesome fruit purity and silky mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by loads of polished tannins. A stunning rendition of the variety." - 98 Points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

2021 Coleraine Cabernet Merlot

$149 each

"The 2021 Coleraine exhibits a commanding presence and majestic poise. The bouquet reveals classic aromas of cassis, dark plum and violet with whispering nuances of cedar and cigar. There are hints of warm spices, compounding the pleasure upon inhalation. The palate is bold and graceful at once, enhanced by plush texture and multi-layered mouthfeel, beautifully framed by refreshing acidity and fine chalky tannins. Robust and substantial with a great line and length, which seem to go on to infinity. This youthful wine is already impossible to resist, but time will reward those who can wait. In sports, they often talk about ‘The Greatest of All Time’, or 'The GOAT'. This 2021 Coleraine is undeniably THE GOAT of New Zealand wine." -100 Points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"Dark and intense, lots of perfume, red and black fruits, tobacco, a leafy pop that’s pure varietal class, creamy oak, lead pencils, aniseed and spice. Medium to full-bodied, a flood of flavour, super ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, tannin is superb, and the finish is so long. Light but so dense. There’s a fresh raspberry juiciness here too, and an extra dimension of tension and energy. All the graphite and presence. Incredible wine." -97+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
