Indigenous to Italy, Sangiovese (from Tuscany) and Nebbiolo (Piemonte) are the country's most noble red grape varieties. In the hands of great producers, and aided by a string of very fine vintages, the lower-priced, entry-level wines from from these regions offer stunning quality and value for money.
You'll adore the versatile, fruit-driven, and thoroughly Tuscan-feeling Poggerino, and admire the startling aromatics, balance and persistence of the Sottimano. Both wines are about as delicious as we can find for the price on the market at the moment and we highly recommend you stock up!
THE WINES
2019 Poggerino Chianti Classico - $39 per bottle
*Organic, 100% Sangiovese
"Ripe cherry, new leather and liquorice, plenty of perfume and dried herb. It’s medium-bodied, but fleshy and flavoursome, savoury but packed with juicy cherry, freshness and suede-like tannin, chewy and long, with a discreet raw almond bitterness. Pretty much all you could ask for in a classico here. It’s a delight." - 94 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
2020 Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo - $49 per bottle
*Organic, 100% Nebbiolo
"You could easily stock up guilt-free on the 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo. The wine knocks it out of the ballpark in this vintage. It shows lovely concentration and lots of color saturation that only comes to Nebbiolo in the best vintages. The bouquet reveals quality fruit with bold cherry and fresh blackberry. The results are especially bright and full of juicy fruit flavors. This is a well-priced option to recommend en masse for your favorite weekday meals." - 92 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
