In 1998, Penfolds imported a heritage selection of vine cuttings from South Australia’s esteemed Kalimna and Magill Estate vineyards and planted them in Californian soil. The original name of the Camatta Hills vineyard was called Creston ‘600’ Ranch, a special place in the Penfolds California timeline for it serves as a reference point to the start of our American journey. Creston Ranch is now honoured in the wine’s name, Bin 600. In recognition of Penfolds history within our Californian wine story, grapes from the original 1998 vine cuttings feature in this Cabernet Shiraz blend. "A gorgeous blend of 73/27% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz matured for 16 months in American oak barriques, 45% new. Deep crimson with plush aromas of damson plum, blackberry, cranberry and boysenberry fruits with hints of brown spice, peppercorn, crushed herbs, vanillin oak, dark chocolate, crushed herbs and earth. There is a fruit weight and elegance on show that is synonymous with Californian wine. There is certainly a lot to like here structurally, and in the elegant, coherent way it moves across the palate. Bin 600 is made using entirely California-grown grapes: Napa Valley, Paso Robles and Sonoma County. This 2022 is a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Shiraz. It spent 16 months in American oak, 45% new. Price is unchanged at $90 RRP.
Firm, dry and substantial. Splintery oak but long sheets of flavour and tannin. Redcurrant leads the way, vanilla notes come with it, dried herbs, rust, cedarwood. It’s always interesting tasting the “internationals” in among so many Australian Penfolds reds. This one instantly felt a bit more stretched and sinewy; a bit less round, in a good way.
