"From plantings around the estate. Wild fermented in stainless steel, then aged six months in concrete tanks before bottling. Bright and grippy, enough juiciness for casual drinking and enough depth to take seriously. The Montepulciano grape curiously can provide impressions of oak characters in its chocolate and spice notes – whatever the case, fun drinking here.
As good a release as we’ve seen – bright, grippy, juicy and generous. Aromas and flavours of dark chocolate, cocoa and plums, to earthen mushroom and beetroot notes. Chewy tannins define the personality here, overlaid with a shake of baking spice and clove and some textural creaminess. "The 2023 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Madia impresses with its depth and complexity, punching well above its price point. Crushed black cherry, sage, violet and hints of floral underbrush form a dramatic bouquet. This is soft and round upon entry, with a noticeable mineral tinge contrasted by depths of ripe red and black fruits that slowly saturate the palate. "This is a more frisky and bony expression of this wine. Cherry, blood plum, a bit earthy, and quite spicy, dried herbs and flowers, has something of a neoprene wetsuit character, but that’s OK with me. Medium-bodied, quite grainy and tangy, orange peel and dark chocolate lends a pleasing gustatory bitterness, quite some chew and grip on a finish of solid length. A bit rustic, but in a good way. Lamb or something with mushrooms is the go here, and with the right food, it will show its best side for sure. Nice." - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
