Domaine Roulot and Sassicaia in Patagonia

Domaine Roulot and Sassicaia in Patagonia

Published by The Wine Emporium on 27th Sep 2021

The brainchild of Jean-Marc Roulot (Domaine Roulot, Burgundy) and Piero Incisa della Rocchetta (Sassicaia, Tuscany), Chacra was established in 2004 as a testament to the quality of the terroir and climate of Río Negro in Patagonia. Pure, delicate and extremely precise, the wines astonished us with their quality, but, with a pedigree like that, it's hardly surprising!

This week we are immensely proud to be able to offer you these uniquely delicious wines, but please keep in mind that quantities are minuscule, so first in best dressed. Enjoy!

2020 Mainqué Chardonnay- $99 per bottle ; $110 rrp

"Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. Creamy and long. Subtle and fine. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Very drinkable now, but will improve." - 94 Points, James Suckling

"Done in collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot, was picked early as the grapes ripened early but maintained acidity. Fermented in barrel without malolactic, spending 11 months in barrique, this has an up-front fruit, a salinity shared with Chacra Chardonnay, and a tasty finish lent by the calcareous components of the alluvial soil." – Producer

2020 Chardonnay - $195 per bottle ; $215 rrp

"There’s real direction and clarity to this white with sliced dried apples, crushed stones and minerals on the nose, as well as hints of biscuit and praline. Some honeysuckle and lemon-grass undertones, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and lively with a line of fresh acidity running through the palate, providing energy and depth. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Drinkable now, but much better in three to four years. Try after 2023." - 97 Points, James Suckling

"Done in collaboration with Jean-Marc Roulot, is produced from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. The wine is intense and energetic, high pitched and lively, round and austere, refined and mineral. It has a dry mouthfeel and a saltiness natural to the area." – Producer

2020 Barda Pinot Noir - $49 per bottle ; $55 rrp

"Plenty of orange peel and pomegranate to the dark strawberry and raspberry aromas. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and fine tannins, which come together nicely and energetically at the finish. Drink and enjoy." - 93 Points, James Suckling

"Pure, minerally and powerful, with concentrated flavors of red plum and dried raspberry, loaded with powerful meaty notes. Sandalwood accents linger on the finish, showing caressing tannins. Its structure being rather airy and open, Barda was conceived to be consumed while still fresh and young. Its alcohol percentage is generally low – 12 to 13 percent. Produced from Chacra’s youngest vineyards, Barda has a strong and character and is intended to be versatile – a perfect companion for most foods. The vineyards, planted in 1990, grow on slightly sandy soils. As all our vineyards, Barda’s vineyards are ungrafted and massale selection yielding over 2 kilos per plant. It is fermented at low temperatures in round cement tanks, with natural and unfiltered indigenous yeasts." – Producer

2019 Treinta y Dos Pinot Noir - $195 per bottle ; $215 rrp

"Extremely perfumed with rose-petal, violet, rose-stem and sweet-strawberry aromas that follow through to a full-bodied palate with tight, juicy tannins that are strong and intense. A very structured, young, top pinot from here. Needs three to four years to soften. Try after 2024." - 98 Points, James Suckling

"Chacra Treinta y Dos is a single vineyard wine, made from old vineyards planted in 1932 on a land layered with clay, sand and pebbles. The most structured of all Chacra’s wines, Chacra Treinta y Dos is meant to be aged. Its soft characteristics and velvety tannins, however, make it drinkable at a younger age. This red balances toasted spice and mesquite notes with the macerated cherry fruit character, remaining fresh through the mineral-tinged finish." – Producer
