Jim Barry New Releases

Jim Barry New Releases

Published by The Wine Emporium on 1st Dec 2021

Being the former winner of the Halliday Winery of the Year (2020) comes with both a lot of prestige, but also a lot of responsibility in backing up that title - a burden that seems to never deter the great folks down at Jim Barry in Clare Valley! These two crisp, textural whites have been favourites for our customers for years now, and their 2021 versions are as good as ever, with special mention going to the Florita Riesling for its marvelous balance of minerality and fruit acidity. On the other hand, those looking for something bolder can look no further than their McRae Wood shiraz, just recently scoring 96 points from Halliday's Wine Companion, and at such great value. Lastly, for the big hitter, the 2017 Armagh Shiraz will sit very comfortably in the cellar for many years to come, but is opening now with great energy and deep, expressive flavour.

2021 Assyrtiko - $32 per bottle ; $36 RRP

Clear, palest straw colour in the glass. This wine opens with citrus rind, lemon blossom and a lick of wet slate on the nose. This wine has a sense of purpose in its line. Clean mineral, white floral and nice texture through the mid and back with classic saline edge to finish. Screaming summer drinking, the finish is clean and refreshingly long.

2021 Florita Riesling - $53 per bottle ; $59 RRP

“Aromas of freshly cut lime, with fleshy lemon and grapefruit juice. Intense focus and purity, with a glass rod like structure through the palate. All framed in florals and fresh lime juice. This wine commands respect, with a finish that is long, powerful and seamless.” – Winemaker’s Notes

"Lemon/lime, a distinct ‘mineral’ feel here, and tightness to the wine, though it’s also not short on flavour. It’s intense, a burst of mixed citrus with a stony/flinty texture, bright clean acidity, and a subtle floral perfume on a finish of excellent precision and length. Classic." - 95 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

2018 McRae Wood Shiraz - $53 per bottle ; $59 RRP

“Darker then the night, black berries, black forest and dark spice, a tight line, coiled tension, the driver is black forest and spice throughout with integrated but youthful tannin line, long drive out the back, a wine built for aging.” – Winemaker’s Notes

"The flavours, the savouriness and the feel of this wine are all appealing. Lots of detail with nothing overt. The palate lends itself to cocoa-powder tannins, the oak is integrated and there's a depth of flavour. It comes out as a complete wine." - 96 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday's Wine Companion

2017 The Armagh Shiraz - $390 per bottle ; $425 RRP

"Largely standard vinification with individual blocks ex The Armagh vineyard; 10 days on skins, some blocks given three weeks’ post-ferment maceration. Elegance isn’t the aim of The Armagh, but the 2017 vintage has made it easy. Richly flavoured with dark fruits. Savoury tannins balance and lengthen the palate." - 96 Points, Halliday Wine Companion 2021

"Such incredible perfume and florality from this standout Shiraz. Expressive and captivating, filled with roses and violets alongside cherries and plum fruit, milk chocolate and some sage notes. Medium-bodied on the palate but it’s the texture and overall presence of the wine in the mouth that gives this star quality. Tannins are fine and seductive, cashmere-like, edged with fruit intensity and spicy sides. This has a good energy to it, mouthwatering and pulsing with life with a long finish and lift at the end. Precision and power —built to last." - 96 Points, Decanter
