Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily. – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

- A BACKGROUND -

Established in 2002 by Marco de Grazia, the Terre Nere estate is located in the northern slopes of Etna, with vineyards between the village of Solicchiata and the town of Randazzo. In 2012, Marco was recognized as one of a small group of winemakers who were responsible for having the slops of Etna formally recognised into designated sub-zones (locally known as Contrade) which was a historical turning point in the region being able to display the differences in each Contrade. The property consists of over 55 hectares, divided into 24 parcels in four crus, with a total vineyard surface of 27 hectares in production and 7 hectares in breeding. The soils differ very much from cru to cru, and even within the crus themselves. The same is true of the altitudes, our vineyards ranging between 600 and 1000 metres above sea level.

"The estate's philosophy is simple. Given an extreme climate, in order to obtain the best and most consistent ripening, our attention must focus on vineyard management. The finest workmanship in all aspects of viticulture is the first thing that sets us apart. And what enables us, bringing home exceptionally fine grapes, not to be invasive in our cellar work. A work best described as aimed above all at expressing the character of our varieties in their specific terroir." - Terre Nere

2020 Etna Rosato - $49 per bottle ; $55 rrp

//100% Organic Nerello Mascalese

"A delicate and refreshing wine for a Mediterranean rosé with plenty of nectarine character and subtle wild-herb notes. Beautiful balance on the medium-bodied palate, then a bone-dry finish with pronounced mineral freshness. From organically grown grapes. Drink now." - 92 Points, James Suckling

2019 Etna Rosso - $49 per bottle ; $55 rrp

//95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% Nerello Cappuccio - 100% Organic

"The purity of fruit is so impressive here with black cherry and dried strawberry to the ash and black-tea undertones. It’s medium to full body with firm, tight tannins and a crisp finish. Floral and some citrus-zest highlights to this. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 94 Points, James Suckling

2019 Santo Spirito Etna Rosso - $90 per bottle ; $105 rrp

//98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio - 100% Organic

"This Etna red has so much going for it, but the amerena-cherry aroma is very ripe and, on the palate, the first impression is of suppleness that we don’t immediately associate with this appellation. Lovely balance right now, thanks to the full body and moderate tannins. Good length, but only moderate tension at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 93 Points, James Suckling

2019 Guardiola Etna Rosso - $90 per bottle ; $105 rrp

//98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio - 100% Organic

"The first impression on the nose is of a dead ringer for a top Gevrey-Chambertin, even one of the Grand-Cru communes! However, alongside the ripe red fruit and earthy character, there’s a firm structure that combines warm and cool elements in the unique way that only Etna reds can achieve. Impressive depth and energy at the very finish. From organically grown grapes. Built for long aging. Drinkable now, but best from 2024." - 95 Points, James Suckling

2019 San Lorenzo Etna Rosso - $119 per bottle ; $139 rrp

//98% Nerello Mascalese, 2% Nerello Cappuccio - 100% Organic

"A stunning combination of fully ripe red stone fruit and berries with cool thyme and sage aromas leads you into the rich, but very well structured Etna red. Lovely balance of fruit and tannin, then a velvety finish with delicate wild-herb and mineral notes. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 94 Points, James Suckling
