Tolpuddle + MMAD Range Specials & Tasting!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 15th Sep 2022

From the gurus over at Shaw & Smith comes a release that has grown increasingly more anticipated throughout the past decade - Tolpuddle's signature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir duo! The '21 vintage is already looking very promising, and what's more - there's a brand new vineyard they've set their minds to; MMAD! A title abbreviated from the first names of the four winemakers, the inaugaral release includes a juicy Chenin Blanc, Grenache and a Shiraz, all from the beautiful old vines of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale!

Each of these releases, as well as a few recognisable favourites from Shaw & Smith, will be on tasting this Saturday (17th September) from 12 to 2pm, so be sure to drop on in to see what they're made of!

2021 Tolpuddle Chardonnay$96 RRP (10% off with any six or more wines ordered!)

"A very exciting vintage. Quite expressive on the nose, with some lemon peel and quince notes. On the palate, there is some breadth and power, and a sense that this will be a long living wine. The touch of opulence is reined in by the classic Tolpuddle Vineyard seam of acidity, bringing the palate into its customary focused line. The grapes were all hand picked, whole bunch pressed, and fermented in French oak. The wine spent nine months in barrel with gentle stirring as required, then rested in tank on lees. Will repay careful cellaring for up to 12 years" - Producer Notes

2021 Tolpuddle Pinot Noir$96 RRP (10% off with any six or more wines ordered)

"This wine is true to the Tolpuddle Vineyard style. It has very intense red and dark berry fruit, as well as some wild fennel and rhubarb notes on the nose. On the palate, there is a lot of concentrated fruit, balanced by fresh acidity and some fine tannins. Cherry and raspberry notes through to darker blueberry and boysenberry give complexity to a palate that flows seamlessly, and some Chinese five spice characters give a hint of more savoury notes to come with time. The grapes were all hand-picked and fermented as a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, in open fermenters, with gentle plunging. The wine was aged in French oak for nine months, of which about one third was new. Will repay careful cellaring for up to 12 years" - Producer Notes

2021 MMAD Blewitt Springs Chenin Blanc$47 RRP (10% off with any six or more wines ordered!)

"MMAD is an exciting new project by Michael Hill Smith MW, Martin Shaw, Adam Wadewitz and David LeMire MW (M,M,A,D). If you like the wines of Shaw + Smith and/or Tolpuddle then you’re likely to dig these wines, because they exhibit that same kind of care and consideration. The jewel that is the Blewitt Springs sub-region proved too strong a lure; they liked it so much they bought the company (or, in this case, the vineyard). There’s old vine Chenin involved here, planted in 1964, with some more recent plantings involved too. A variety of techniques were employed in this wine’s vinification but some skin contact was allowed, as was time in concrete vats, as was time in puncheons. Seriously good wine. Intense, textural, a bit of x-factor and a finish that goes on and on. Citrus juice and rind, river stones, a peppery note, a hint of the sea. Some honey or perhaps honeyed but notes in there too; whispers on that sea breeze. Refined and powerful at once. MMAD has hit the ground running." - 94 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

2021 MMAD Blewitt Springs Grenache - $72 RRP (10% off with any six or more wines ordered!)

"The grenache vines in the MMAD vineyard were planted in 1939. That’s quite a year, in world terms, to begin your life. This wine was aged in old oak; no new oak was used. Truly beautiful grenache. Sweet and ripe but savoury and, even, crunchy with it. Best of many worlds. Woodsmoke, herbs, raspberry, cloves and a sweet earth character. The presser mentions pomegranate and it’s a good call; it beings that seed-like crunch to the wine. Tannin is ultra fine and the finish is noteworthy. Blewitt Springs is a great place to grow red wine grapes and here, again, it’s off and away, in full voice." - 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

2021 MMAD Blewitt Springs Shiraz - $72 RRP (10% off with any six or more wines ordered!)

The oldest shiraz vines on the MMAD vineyard were planted in 1941. This is as gorgeous as the come. It’s loaded with pepper, violets, blue- and black-berries, stalks and dark chocolate. It presents as one and it presents as many. The flush of flavour, the almost-aniseed aspect, the finesse and the form; everything pulls in the one direction here. Spicy, fruity, stalky and more. It’s kind of take a bow time, for the vineyard, the sub-region and the team involved." - 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
