Tuscan Delights Special & on Pour + Latta, Hughes & Hughes and Scorpo on Show!

Published by The Wine Emporium on 6th Jun 2024

Another two wine-centered tastings are on the horizon for some end-of-week enjoyment! Friday (6th June) will bring in some standouts from Victorian cult favourites Latta, Tasmania's Hughes & Hughes, and Scorpo out of the Mornington Peninsula! A most cherished industry legend Chris Fullerton from Cork and Co will be here to host and pour these wines he knows so well. This will run from 4:30 to 7pm!

We then take a trip over to the sun-speckled lands of Tuscany for Saturday's tasting (7th June), with seven stunning expressions and blends of world-class Sangiovese, including Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, a classic Super Tuscan red out of Bolgheri, and savoury Chianti Classico from Candialle. True Italian wine scholar David Bone from Trembath & Taylor will be your host for this one; if there's one man in Brisbane who knows everything about Tuscany or anything else about the beautiful boot-shaped country, it's him! Treat yourself and join us 12 to 2pm!

Candialle 'La Misse' Chianti Classico 2022$52 on special; $59 RRP

"La Misse, the little Miss of Candialle, is mostly Sangiovese with small amounts of Malvasia Nera and Canaiolo, fermented and aged in concrete for eighteen months. Fruit forward and juicy with bright red cherry fruit and attractive freshness." - Winemaker Notes

Candialle Chianti Riserva 2016$98 on special; $110 RRP

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is a potent, brooding wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice and dried herbs infuse the 2016 with notable depth. The 2016 spent 18 months in French oak and 6 months in cement, plus extended time in bottle prior to release. I find the density and complexity here remarkable" - 92 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Boscarelli Prugnolo Rosso 2021$43 on special; $49 RRP

"Sweet herbs mix with plum and wild strawberry notes as the 2021 Rosso di Montepulciano Prugnolo opens in the glass. It’s juicy and round in style, with a stimulating core of bright acidity that enlivens its tart wild berry fruits. This finishes wickedly fresh yet potent, leaving a liquid floral staining that lingers on and on. The Prugnolo is a wonderfully zesty blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Mammolo." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Boscarelli Vino Nobile de Montepulciano 2019$72 on special; $82 RRP

// 85% Sangiovese + 15% Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo
"The De Ferrari family make multiple passages to pick each bunch at optimal ripeness. Grapes for the Vino Nobile came in between 30 September and 7 October. It's a plentiful, chewy, exuberant mouthful yet balanced and poised in its size. Wild forest berries harmonise with cedar and fresh earth nuances. The plump fruit is girdled by burly, ripe tannins and polished oak is in step with both. There's a smoothness without any lack of intrigue, while racy acidity adds extra crunch." - 94 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter

Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore 2019$245 on special; $280 RRP

// 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese
"The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is a real beauty and shows very nicely today based on advancing vine age alone. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah vines show great results after seven years, whereas Merlot and Sangiovese vines need a few more years before they start to show that extra degree of complexity, the winemaking team tells me. This is a complete and beautifully balanced wine that shows soft extraction and especially sweet tannins. It fermented in truncated conical oak vats and finished in barrique for 18 months." - 97 Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Grattamacco shines for its signature leafy, Mediterranean forest aromas, with assertive kiwi peel, restrained cassis, bell pepper and chocolate flavours. The attack is velvety, youthful and firm, less easy-going compared to Alberello but more tight-knit and extremely elegant - the Sangiovese grapes seem to emphasise the red freshness of the fruit. The length is amazing." - 96 Points, Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter

Gorelli Rosso di Montalcino 2019$105 on special; $120 RRP

// 100% Sangiovese
"Waiting for his first Brunello next year, Giuseppe Gorelli impressed with his second vintage of Rosso di Montalcino. Since 2017, he has managed 6.5 hectares in the northwest part of the Montalcino appellation. This 2019 is full of floral peony intensity with blood orange and smoky woodland notes. Velvety and dense, its savoury orange focus is followed by great refinement on the finish with touches of liquorice. Firm yet integrated acidity gives persistence." - 93 Points, Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter

Gorelli Brunello di Montalcino 2019$254 on special; $290 RRP

// 100% Sangiovese

"The Gorelli company is a small star that shines on the Montalcino hill. Gorelli is one of newest wineries in Montalcino but owner/winemaker Giuseppe Gorelli is no newcomer to the region. Born and bred in Montalcino, Giuseppe worked with the grand master of Sangiovese, Giulio Gambelli, at the Consorzio di Brunello di Montalcino for fifteen years before returning to his family’s winery, Due Portine. He then went on to establish the renowned Le Potazzine. In 2017 he struck out on his own and leased six hectares north of the town centre. Gorelli has leased 6ha north of the town centre comprised of 1.10 hectares for Brunello, 2.2 for Rosso di Montalcino and 3 for IGT Toscana. The vineyards, in the coolest part of the DOCG (dare we say sub zone!) at an altitude of 340 metres and facing north east, yield refined and beautifully perfumed Sangiovese." - Importer Notes

"Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Very youthful and lifted with lots of cherry fruit on the nose. Polished, succulent cherry fruit with a thick layer of fine, chewy tannins underneath. Seems ready but needs to lose its puppy fat. Drink 2025 to 2035." - 17++ out of 20, Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com
