"The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in the early 1990s. Now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Stylistically, RWT is contemporary, opulent, and finely tuned. An interesting contrast to the well-established Grange, which is a more concentrated, muscular, and assertive style. RWT is made from Barossa Valley Shiraz grapes primarily selected for their aromatic qualities, varietal typicity, fine tannins, and plush texture. Maturation in French oak provides another contrast to Grange. The result is a wine that redefines Barossa Valley Shiraz at the highest quality level. While delightfully approachable on release, RWT Bin 798 has the concentration and balance to age for many years." - Winemaker Notes
"Maturation is in French oak hogsheads, 82% of them new, for a period of fourteen months. The fruit is entirely from the Barossa Valley. An opaque, dark blood red colour, the nose reveals aromas of chocolate, plums, smoked meats, superbly integrated oak, leather, cocoa powder, florals, blueberries, spices and a touch of vanilla. This is absolutely seamless and so beautifully balanced that there is not a hair out of place. Quite juicy acidity and a long persistent finish, there is good energy here and a pleasing freshness. "No longer a Red Winemaking Trial, the moniker has stuck for Bin 798, which is a showcase for fragrant Barossa fruit wrapped in a polished veneer of French oak (hogsheads, 82% new). This vintage features a dense and currently rather stern palate, its lingering core of ripe black fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins. Engaging aromatics, with a floral lift of violets and lavender, blackberries, blueberries, coffee, dark chocolate, white pepper and furniture polish, hint at much more to come as this wine evolves in the cellar." - 94 Points, Julie Sheppard, Decanter
